[howto] q3map2 speed up on linux

Postby Gego » Sat Jul 18, 2009 7:31 pm

after looking at the gnome-system-monitor while compiling a map i noticed that only one core was used... so i went searching and found this: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Q3Map2

Code: Select all
-threads <number of threads Q3Map2 should use>

* Specifies a number of threads to use during compiling. On Windows, Q3Map2 automatically detects the number of CPUs present, and sets the threadcount accordingly. The -threads switch can be used to override this behavior.
* Linux users will need to manually set -threads in order to activate SMP support in Q3Map2.

so by customizing the build menu and adding -threads n+1 (where n is number of cores or available threads (an single core P4 on sirtin chipsets has 2, an i7 has 8, C2Q has 4 etc etc ) you will make map compiling a lot faster..

are you shore that is is not just jumping between threads?

I will have to do a benchmark.... (just letting it run and not using the computer...) but that will have to wait...

Well, it uses 100% of both of my cores so...
