new weapon concept

This would be excellent for the Nexrun mod. Currently it only has a laser tweaked to at least somehow resemble a gauntlet, which is pretty bad. :P
You can test the current settings at nexrunladder.dyndns.org:26001. It's supposed to combine the best of Quake 3 CPM and Nexuiz. Suggestions are very welcome :)

Please do- even if Dib and Yoda want this to be a melee weapon of its own, having a melee secondary attack for the laser is still just as cool of a feature.

Because the laser doesn't use ammo, you start with it, it could use another offensive option anyway and it is useful as a mobility device which makes it perfect to combo with a close in attack.

Dib(Icarus) is apparently working on something else. I am going to redo some of the model/texture/animations and try and find someone else to do the coding aspects of it.
Why has a developer ever needed any reason other than "it looks bloody awesome?"

I really like the model, yoda, it's quite nice.
However, I think that a melee weapon will be used more as a 'backstabbing' weapon to counter snipers and such. So maybe if it did 1.5x damage on someone facing away from you (from 100 degrees to 200 or so), and 2x damage on someone with a nex. That might, however, be better for a secondary (paired with a push?). For a primary, damage with a short paralysis period might be cool (it's electricity, right), but it would be important not to go overboard with the time.

It would have a much more used role if it was off-hand like Modern Warfare's knife or Halo's melee attacks. About the only time it would be used (as a switchable weapon) is to eliminate campers.

Well there's basically three ways to have one or more melee attacks in Nexuiz that make sense:


1) As a secondary attack on a weapon with a ranged primary (or vice versa). My favorite is a melee secondary attack on the laser.

2) As a primary or secondary attack on a weapon that can help close the distance to make a melee attack possible. Think a melee secondary to the on-hand grappling hook or crylink.

3) As an Off-hand melee attack that can be used anytime, regardless of what weapon you are currently using.

maybe the secondary can be a "lunge" attack, like with the sword from halo.

I would suggest an offhand weapon, though then it would look like players have 3 hands. However, the other possibilities seem lame and too slow for nexuiz.
