Slimming down Nexuiz WITHOUT removing features

Postby Stevoisiak » Thu Sep 24, 2009 10:08 pm

UPDATE: After deleting a few mac/linux specific files, and compressing the app using the PortableApps AppCompactor, I have cut away 30 MB. Keep in mind, I have only used an automated compresser program, and deleted some non windows files. The dedicated server functions are untouched, textures and graphics haven't been compressed, all source/readme/unused files are still there, ect. In fact, 20MB can be cut off the official pacage with compression alone, leaving all linux/mac files. But, thats for another topic. I'll post what I have now for you guys to check out soon.

Hello. I'm trying to make a smaller, and slightly more USB friendly version of Nexuiz WITHOUT removing maps, or dulling down graphics/features. To do this, I am going to use UPX to compress files, remove the dedicated server feature, delete any unneeded files, and delete any files used by the Mac and Linux versions that are not needed by Windows.

If you know of any files that can be deleted, or any compression tips, please share them.

I'm afraid there's not much platform-specific content in Nexuiz. It's just the executables in the main folder:
Linux: everything with "linux" in its name
Mac: anything with "osx" and the ".app" folders
Windows: .exe and .dll

Anything "dedicated" is a server.

you can help by making sprites of all of the characters, weapons, and items; and making qc to handle sprite anims and do auto aiming bullets on y-axis and prevent player from looking around only able to walk forward, back, turn left, turn right, and lesson graphics settings.

You could try to compress the tga image files by reducing their colour palette (to 128 for example) and saving them with RLE-compression (Gimp).

In most cases this will make almost no difference in their looks, but will have a significant impact on (packed) file size.

Only down-side is that they will no longer be visible in NetRadiant, but that's not needed to play anyway.

I think we definitely need a separate dedicated server release, since it can be bogged down to around 20-30mb with little work. Everything a dedicated server needs is basically:
- The engine
- Maps with light data removed (I bet VIS is still needed for serverside culling of entities)
- Models (reason being that it does not know where to attach the weapon model otherwise, maybe someone could make "null" models for servers with only this information?)
- Configs
