configs and cvars

Postby Yoda almighty » Tue Jan 05, 2010 1:33 am

I spent the last hour messing around with Cvars for nexuiz. most of my friends agree that Nexuiz is way too fast, and frankly not nearly as fun as some other free FPSs they have played, so I tried changing some things to make it funner (imo). setting the speed to 210, which is very reasonable. also, I didn't change the jump speed, so you can still bunny hop. and i messed around with the nex, RL and mortar, so they are actually powerfull. making the nex 200 dmg and slower firing rate, and rl/gl to 190 dmg with a wider spread, and slower fire rate. now i would like to make a custom key that adds to player speed while held down. (running) and UT style dodging (which i know where to get) how would I go about the first? and i am wondering how you would go about saving custom Cvar settings. I was editing them from the "advanced settings" button in the misc tab of the options. is there a way to save settings edited in this manner, or will i have to go into the data folder?

Depends on whats fun for you.. there are a whole lot of people that love fast games also a lot of people think the nex is too strong :P

If you edit settings from the "advanced settings" dialog you can also see properties of variables. "SAVED" ones get saved automatically when changed. An other way is to create a file Nexuiz/data/autoexec.cfg and put your changes there.
In Nexuiz the default is to have the player "running" already. There is little sense in making players walk and only run when pressing a button. Why should anyone NOT do that? :P

well, i think the general idea i am trying to do is simply give the player more control of the character, while at the same time subjecting them to a more realistic view of the world. new players who are used to games like call of duty may appreciate this and may be more likely to stick around if this option is available for them. and maybe in time they will grow to appreciate the faster gameplay and go back to the way nexuiz is supposed to beplayed. but when a new player comes on complaining "it's too fast", you can direct them here.

and maybe the devs will find something enjoyable in the changes I am making and decide to keep 1 or 2 of them.

back to business, earlier I saw an option to change the weapon switch speed, but I can't find it now. does anyone remember off hand where it is? that and the options governing fall damage?

and how would one go about adding a key to make the the player move faster when a key is pressed and go back to normal speed when released? eventually, i want too make it so you can only run for a short amount of time, before you must stop. (like fatigue) also, maybe to indicate when you are running out of fatigue, i can find a way to make the screen begin to blur a little, then go back to normal when you stop? but that can be done later. for now i just want something to increase your speed as long as a button is held, and only when the button is held.

on a side note while looking through the list of cvars, i saw an option to add an overlay screen when zoomed. i thought this was interesting, but setting it to 1 had no apparent difference.

People that think Nexuiz is too fast can also try Nexuiz Havoc.. There are buttons all over the menus to switch to that mode, but i'm not sure there are many servers running in havoc mode. I used to host one though, maybe i can run it again if people wanna use it

I tried havoc mode once. It didn't seem much different.

and the speed is the same for nexuiz and havoc. (400)

BTW i'm running an ONS server again.. in Havoc mode. Switch to havoc mode and unless there are many other havoc servers which i doubt it should be easy finding the planetnexuiz.de ONS server.

And havoc not being much different? All/most of the guns do work differently and the movement is more Q3 like then in base Nexuiz. For example strafejumps work just like in Q3 and there is hardly aircontrol. But maybe it takes some time to notice such diffs.

They should try Nexrun instead. It uses 320 as default speed. They'll be slow as hell as long as you don't tell them anything about strafing :D

well, the way i have it set up now has the speed at 210, but airspeed at 300, at air accel at 5. so you walk at a fairly normal speed, but bunny hopping allows you to reach a fairly fast speed very quickly, making bunny hopping a lot more enjoyable in my opinion.
