Finding Open Source Textures

Postby bengreenwood » Fri Jan 29, 2010 8:57 pm

Hi,

I'm looking for sites where you can find copyright-free textures that can be used to make FPS maps. Can anyone give me some advice about finding such textures?

I want them for a Half-Life map (converting one of the old Quake DM maps), not a Nexuiz one- but I figured this would be a great place to ask, because you guys are probably experienced at finding free textures. With that said, maybe I'll do some mapping for Nexuiz later, depending on how this map turns out.

Anyway, thanks.

You can try some links in this thread viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9 (scroll down to textures and see the later posts)

Especially http://opengameart.org/ is a nice site!

However notice that that most of those are not copyright-free, but copyleft or licensed very freely. Really copyright-free works, e.g. ones in the public domain are relatively rare.

Filter forge is a texture creation and photoshop filter tool. It's not free, but there is a huge database of textures made with it that are free to use. they are all tillable and all have normal/bump/etc maps. (if you have filterforge, you can edit the textures as well, to suit your own needs, and it can generate maps for them)

Woha, great textures. But can you release a map using these textures under the GPL? Then those textures would have to be released under the GPL too... I don't think this is covered by the terms and conditions of use, or is it?
<Community>: Why was the name "Nexuiz" licensed to IllFonic in a way that allows IllFonic to use the name without any suffix or subtitle for a commercial console game?

i think I remember getting on the forums once and asking, and I think he answer was yes, but you might want to double check.
