Really big maps & campaign possible?

Postby top_cat » Sun Mar 07, 2010 6:35 pm

Hey!

Can I make a really(relatively) big map and have a campaign? I mean like a single player campaign, like bioshock, halo, crysis etc have done. I don't mind it only having rather average graphics, I was thinking a lot of it would be in big space stations (maybe having some battles in the local space outside the space station using ships like the covenant have in Halo) I've seen some posts from other members but they are from a few years ago, I don't know what the game is like now. I know the game is mostly designed for small areas, but I was wondering, can I design a really big map, and the game loads the areas dynamically? Also, can I have triggered events like AIs (aliens and such) coming at me in parts of the game, and they walk relatively realistically, etc? :) Can I have the game at realistic walking pace, and have save points and that?

Sorry about the massive amount of questions, I have played around with GTKRadiant before, but I'm not sure if any of what I've suggested is possible. I really hope it is.

I am not sure if it is in its current state. However, I think it could if someone did some work on the code. if someone was willing to do that, it would be pretty awesome.

I also hope that some larger outdoor maps start getting worked on, to coincide with the official release of vehicles.

also, welcome to the forums!
Why has a developer ever needed any reason other than "it looks bloody awesome?"

Thanks very much for the warm welcome. If I start work then it will be slow due to exams. :(

The last time I used GTKRadiant tools with Nexuiz I hit some sort of limit while making terrain. I think it was something to do with brushes. Are these limitations still present? Also, can I make my own shaders, like GLSL shaders that do things with textures etc?
