He wants to take a map and flip it 90° so that you are kind of 'walking on the walls'. Maybe this was inspired by prey..
I'm not sure this is easliy possible with the .bsp format. But using the map source and radiant it should be rather easy. For something similar see this map: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=561

hexing = using a hexadecimal editor (and you call yourself a geek???)

flipzone is woaeiurd... but fun. got me really confused :P
what did prey do/say? i was just thinking about oilrig and maps and stuff... dont remember. I mean i thought "its just water and gravity. Cant be that hard". i later realized there are lighting, spawnpoints, items and stuff.

how about a "map request" thread?

Prey (http://www.prey.com for the windows :( demo) has adjustable gravity. So you can sometimes walk on the walls or ceilings and even use a switch to change this. With something like this all you would have to do is change the gravity to get your sideways map..
Its is extremly confusing in multiplayer mode. Not only do you have to look everywere for the attacking enemy but also had to learn how to change 'your floor aka gravity' to get this important item on the ceiling :) and also because in some way you had to learn 6 maps at once.. After all you have 6 ways to change gravity..

If prey were not windows only i would have bought the collectors edition it the day it was out.. its a shame using the crossplattform doom3 engine but only supporting windows.. :(

I can't understand why Prey it isn't available for Linux either, there's absolutely no valid reason why. I believe there is a dedicated server for Linux, so why not the client? Support issues, maintainability, cost, I don't think so? I guess it makes sense to create a dedicated server though to help support their online community.

It’s a real shame if you ask me. They could do what Epic and others do and provide limited or even no official support but at least provide an option. The engine renderer is after all OpenGL and I think OpenAL provides the multi-channel sound/EAX?

The multiplayer is indeed very strange but as a result extremely fun and addictive. Jumping while mounted to the ceiling or walls causes the gravity to revert to ‘normal’ and in doing so flipping your viewpoint around and dropping to the floor. It’s very unusual to see players running and firing at each other from all angles and directions. Shooting the buttons to switch the orientation of gravity is pretty cool especially with loose objects and corpses in the map with physics being applied to them. :)

I think I would have bought the Collectors Edition as well if they at least provided a fair option. :( Maybe they’ll change their mind in the near future, hopefully.

EDIT: Some people have mentioned that it works very well with WINE. I assume this is due to its effective use of well supported OpenGL/AL libraries instead of other such engines that use DirectX which are buggy in WINE. It would still be nice to at least provide an official Linux client though.

I hope when Duke Nukem Forever is finally released this time next century it will include Linux support (It’s using UnrealEngine 3 of late – unless they’ve changed engine yet again).

I tried the demo and it run quite good in wine. Though it did not give me sound and winecfg crashed when i tried to configure the sound. But i think that just a issue on my side and it also was the first time i run wine :)
Maybe i'll buy it in 3-6 month if its available for 10-20 euro somewere and use it in wine if i get it configured. That way i will not support a windows only software producer but still be able to play the game in linux.

I'm not sure if there are maps in Nexuiz that will support this in a nice way. They are not layout in a way this works easily..

All this prey talk got me thinking.. it should be easy to change the gravity on a per player base but is it also possible to change (turn) the view port if gravity changes???

either gravity or jump height would have to be adjusted. would be more jumping rather than running around
