Mapping Tutorials

Postby Vermeulen » Tue Feb 28, 2006 9:45 pm

Big tnx to Summer_Willow for going tough the list for dead links and sorting the survivors :)

Heres what I think are the best links for beginners -
==============================================
http://www.richdiesal.map-craft.com/tut ... index.html -- Good collection of tutorials and tips (based arround jediknight2 editing, but most things still apply to Nexuiz editing)

http://www.planetquake.com/bubba/mapping.html -- shows very basics, good explanations, bad font layout & background choice

http://www.wolfensteinx.com/surface/tutorials.html -- helps get you started with Rad + shows decent preferences for it

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Q3Map2 -- great info on using this tool for make compiling and useful front-ends for it

http://zdev.dvrdns.org/radiant_tutorial ... tents.html -- specific to Nexuiz and written by C.Brutail & tZork in our community. :)

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Radiant -- correct link ... awesome book, very basic & kind of fun if you prefer to jump right in.

For the more advanced mappers -
===============================

http://method.gamedesign.net/ld_process.htm -- for the more advanced level designer, but shows the "Method" way of mapping, IE design & sketch everything in advance, plan everything out, etc.

http://aeons.planetquake.gamespy.com/ae ... apping.php -- another "method" mapper with a great overview of how to map as well as what to expect.

http://www.lunaran.com/page.php?id=1 -- Blog from a mapper at Big Rooster (formerly of Raven Software), not very useful to beginners but might help give ideas/insight to advanced mappers. Example page of one of his map posts: http://www.lunaran.com/page.php?id=165

http://members.lycos.co.uk/quakeroats/q ... er_manual/ -- recommended by tZork for learning about shaders (Advanced stuff)

Useful to both Beginner & Advanced maybe -
============================================

http://www.gamedesign.net/node/111 -- very generalized information, might be good if you want to familiarize yourself with the terms you'll encounter in mapping. Some articles are *very* technical.

http://web.archive.org/web/200108112227 ... #qw3_water -- List of Links to a boat load of tutorials of all sorts, everything from Bot AI pathing to mapping to shading to sound editing!

Anything below this point is the OLD list. unsorted, dead etc links remain.

could use a little help

Postby Rayne » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:35 pm

I am new to mapping in general, just thought i'd try my hand at it. I've messed around with the UT editor but haven't done much...Anyhow, i am going to try to make a map for Nexuiz. I installed 2.0, the proper gtkradient, and used that nifty lil program to get it configured for editing nexiuz maps. I started with one of the tutorials listed on the sticky post...Bubba's tutorial i think, one of the first few on the list and made my box and hollowed it and whatnot, and the next part of the tutorial said 'now go inside and take a look' & i used directional arrows/mouse to position the camera in the box but on my screen instead of looking like i was in a room i would see like...parts of the room i would see the colors i set for walls/floor/ceilings ect..kind of glithches in and out but it never looks like an actual room or like the camera isin the box i've made like the tutorial demonstrates. . Advice?
Also, is it a bad idea for me to try to break my mapping cherry on nexiuz or should i start with quake or something similiar or does it really make any difference at all?

And from those who know, what would be the best tutorials on/off of the list for learning to create nexiuz maps with gtkradient?

Appreciate your time.

Its all a bit unclear, but from what i understand you did make it as far as holowing the box and moving the camera inside..? And now you wish to texture it in i uderstand it right. To texture something you will first need to load the textures you wish to use. this is done in the "textures" menu. select a textures subset and it will be displayed in the texturewindow (lower right corner by default). When you found a texture you like, select the wall, floor or celing(s) you wish to have this texture on and then click the texture in teh texture window.

Srating out with nexuiz insted of say quake3 or ET will not make mutch of a diffrance. there are difrances between al thise, but the basics are the same for all thise.

I would recomend you try and follow tutorials for quake3 for the basic stuff, most of this works just the same in nexuiz.

For the question of what tutorials.. bubbas stuff should work well for the basics. A big part of gettin into mapping is just trial and errror and many, many hrs of practice.

Good luck and Have fun =)

Thank you for your advice. I guess i wasn't too clear on explaining my problem because i wasn't too clear on what the problem was. I know how to apply a texture. let me try to explain again..heh..
I make the box for the room, hollow it, position camera. Only, i cant' exactly get the camera inside the box so it shows me the inside of the room properly. It's all fragmented and distorted. Could the maybe be a problem with my video card? It's just hard for me to go inside my room and edit it when I can't go in and see an actual room. Maybe this will help you understand what I was trying to say. The screenshots on the tutorial show him just positioning camera inside and being able to look around and see the pretty little box he's created, but for me it only shows fragments of the room, depending on how i position the camera. Just kind of annoying. If this still doesn't help anyone to understand what I'm trying to say then i'll try to take some screenshots and post them later. i think i did a better job of describing the problem this time, though, i was a tad intoxicated during my last post. *ahem* :lol:

Ah i see what you mean now, well it sounds a bit like you have the camera inside one of the walls.

Theres a few diffrent ways of moving the camera vew. Just using the arrow keys, hard to get any presition with this one, i presonaly never use it. Using the mouse + arrows, the way i usualy oriant myself in cam view; First rightclick in the 3d view to enter freefly mode then use the mouse to "look" and the arrow keys to move. to exit this more press rmb again. Anotehr way to move is holding down the ctl key and pressing the mousewheel / middle button in the 2d view. To change the camera ngle just press the middle button.

Hope this solves yer probs.
