End Of The Year Mapping Challenge (2009)

Postby Samual » Mon Sep 21, 2009 7:20 am

Update: IT'S OVER!!! The contest is complete, check out this post to see who won!

Introduction:
In essence, Nexuiz's worst quality at the moment is its lack of very good maps. As standards increase for creating maps, i'm sure we can fix this -- even if it's a slow process. Today, I want to challenge you all to create those better maps in hopes of improving the experience given from Nexuiz. Now, this is a contest... And thus, it has a reward -- But also rules. I'm now going to explain these attributes.

Rules:
- #1: ALL CONTENT MUST BE GPL - No exceptions. (Except for Oblivion :P)
- #2: The textures used should be of good quality and/or high resolution. If it's done in a nice way the textures won't matter too much though. (Some exceptions can be made for maps based on other maps.. Such as making a CTF map out of a DM map.)
- #3: Map submissions have to be made by you, but can be from before this event started. Basically, as long as you made it and it fits the other rules -- It will be added.
- #4: Try to balance the map as much as possible.. Avoid putting weapons unevenly in your map. If you're making a CTF/TDM map, perhaps put most of the weapons in the center of it?

Contest Information:
This contest begins on the 21st of September (9/21/2009), and ends on the 1st of January (1/01/2010). Voting will begin on December 1st (12/01/2009), while map submission will be closed on the same date. Now, as for reward, I can't promise you getting your map into Nexuiz.. However I can say that any map that is submitted here will be looked at, and if it's approved by the project manager (m0rfar) and the devs, I would assume that it could go into Nexuiz 2.5.5 or 2.6. (But, that isn't necessarily only available for maps that win the contest -- All maps will be looked at :D)

Note: If the maps are outdated, I will most likely not know unless you tell me to update the links. Either way, the latest version of the map is what is important.
----------

Anyway, the whole point of this is to bring some more activity to Nexuiz and possibly improve it by adding new/better maps to the game. But also for mappers to have fun doing this, and hopefully you will. Good luck! :D

I recommend more specific design criteria, open-ended is too general.

The last mapping contest used a 2048^3 cube as the requirement, Strahlmann's Strength map was the result.

Community votes anyway, so doesn't matter. What matters is if the map is actually a good map in the eyes of the community.. Of course, absurdly large maps will be rejected...

I've actually been in the process of slowly remaking The Smelter from quake 2 but its got a LOT of work to be done as of yet.
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

I, personaly, would like to see a good outdoor map. i would try it myself, but I can't get netradient to run on my computer :(
Why has a developer ever needed any reason other than "it looks bloody awesome?"

Mapping contest #2 was similarly open-ended, it didn't receive any submissions.

No criteria mean it is impossible to compare maps, therefore it is no longer a 'contest'.

I already have been told by 3 people that they want to submit their maps.. They're going to wait a bit until it's done, then submit it... Those included:

soylentctf (MaKR)
minideck (lda17h)
dance-enclosed.. Well Maybe not on this one, we'll see what Dib does.

And possibly fr_ctf.. We'll find out.

So its ok to submit maps created/started before the competition opened?
HOF:
<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
<Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D
<Samua>Lies, that only applies to other people.

Haven't seen dance, but Soylent CTF and minideck are amazing. Soylent CTF especially was one of the finer CTF maps I've played in any game.
I have left this website with the rest of the GPL Nexuiz community. You can find us at Xonotic.org
