Ubuntu 6.10, Nexuiz freezes on quit

Postby starsandbars14 » Fri Dec 29, 2006 6:47 am

OK this is kind of annoying, I have an issue where the game is freezing up completely when I answer "Yes" to the quit dialog. I can see my mouse above the in-game graphics but the arrow doesn't respond either. The only thing that really helps me at that point is a restart of the X server.

I have Nexuiz-v222 and my video settings are at default. If anyone wants me to post my xorg.conf file just let me know, if we can get this fixed without it that's fine too.

Try running it in windowed mode from a terminal:

Code: Select all
./nexuiz-linux-glx.sh -window

In there, switch to the console and type quit. Do you get some extra information in the terminal? If not, open a new terminal and type: "killall -SEGV nexuiz-linux-686-glx", that should get you a core dump you can open in gdb.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

The only thing it says in terminal when I do that is "OpenGL backend shutting down."

I found a way past it though, by running X in one vt, xterm in another, then the game from there. It quits now and I'm also able to change my display settings.

If you want to go the "second X server route", why not do it more automatically?

Open your copy of nexuiz-linux-glx.sh. The last line reads

Code: Select all
exec ./${nexuiz} "${@}"

Change it to:

Code: Select all
exec startx ./${nexuiz} "${@}" -- :6

Then the script will start a new X for Nexuiz without a terminal on it. You can leave it using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, for example.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
