No video on my macbook pro

Postby igor rabovsky » Mon Jan 01, 2007 8:45 pm

Let me preface this by saying, I can run games like Quake 4 and Warcraft 3 at highest graphical settings without any framerate issues, lag or problems.

I got Nexuiz because Quake 4 lacks the great online feel Q3 had. I first learned of Nexuiz through a buddy of mine.. who now prefers the game over Quake.

I downloaded Nexuiz 2.2.2 or whatever, and everytime I load the mac aps, I get nothing. For a second, I see the word "Loading" and then all I get is a black screen with some kickin' electronic music in the background.

I read some of the other forums, and tried to adjust my refresh rate and vid_height and vid_width and whatnot, but nothing worked.

here's my system:
-15'' MacbookPro
-Intel Core Duo, 2.16 GHz
-1 GB Memory
-ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB
-Mac OSX 10.4.8

Help, please?

First, switch to windowed mode: on the console (shift-esc), type:

Code: Select all
vid_fullscreen 0
vid_restart
quit

If that works, the game will run windowed from then on. If that is really hit, you need to set the right values for vid_refreshrate, vid_width and vid_height, whatever they need to be for your Macbook. If that does not work, open a Terminal.app and type:

Code: Select all
mkdir -p ~/.nexuiz/data
echo vid_fullscreen 0 > ~/.nexuiz/data/config.cfg

That should get you a clean configuration for windowed mode. Does it start up then?
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

update:

still not working.

tho, i got it to work in a small window.
granted, within that window, the game is ridiculously laggy. The audio is unbearably choppy and so is the video...

when i fullscreen it, [all using the console], the audio is normal again, yet I get no video.

Regardless, within the small window, I joined an "instant action" game.. laggily.

Within the game, it was highly laggy. Still testing playing around, I fulscreened it..
and now I had video. Granted, it didnt look nearly as good as I wanted to.
My crosshair was a red box. All the text in the game wax black boxes [looked as if someone took a marker and crossed it out]. And there was a bunch of little graphical glitches. I couldnt explore game options, tho.. the screen wont appear.

That being said, based on this judgement, its most likely not a problem on my end. The game ran.. somewhat fine... graphically speaking. No lag after all those steps, yet several little crosshair and text glitches among other things.

Perhaps this game just doesnt work on intel-based macs and in theory, all I'm doing is emulating a PowerPC based program?

hi

I have the same problem on my Macbook Pro.
Thats my workaround.

Nexuiz needs only the nexuiz.app and the data-dir with the big *.pk3 file.
Best you create a dir eg nexuiz in Applications-dir copy the nexuiz.app und the data-dir in it.
If you now start the v2.2.2 game it is very lagy.
I copied my old v2.2.1 nexuiz.app back in the /Applications/Nexuiz/ and it runs pretty fine.
I have then v2.2.2 features like colored ping in join-tab, too.

If this doesnt work use the *.pk3 file from v2.2.1 and add the *.pk3 file form the patchv2.2.1-v2.2.2 and use the v2.2.1 nexuiz.app, but copy first the v2.2.2 nexuiz.app for the libs.
You find v2.2.1full here http://downloads.sourceforge.net/nexuiz ... g_mirror=0
and a patch v2.1-v2.2.1 here http://downloads.sourceforge.net/nexuiz ... g_mirror=0
or visit http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... p_id=81584

I wanna try to compile a new nexuiz.app tomorrow and hope it will work.

I have i nice versionbug too, but i thing it is because i patches from v2.0
I create the server using the create-menu, but have this massage on every other server in internet, too.
And i can play an every server.

So you are saying the OS X problems appeared in 2.2.2 and did not happen in 2.2.1? Nothing OS X specific has changed in that version range, so this is really odd. However, the build system is a PPC Mac and we have no single Intel Mac for testing. We do supply an universal binary, but we have no means for testing it on an Intel Mac. I can however assure you that it runs fine on a PPC Mac.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

thanks man, that helped a lot. The game now works with the 2.2.1 app under 2.2.2 data dir.

I guess its just a problem with the 2.2.2 app.

Perhaps the game developers should know about this?

I posted this in the "no video 2.22" thread, but I'll repeat it here anyway:

The game itself runs fine. But all the menus are pitch black. It is possible to join games etc if one manages to locate the right buttons. 2.2.1 worked fine on my system.

The problem lies with the menu screens, not the game.

Very weird... does the console appear visible when pressing shift-esc

a) in the black menu
b) in game?
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

a) Nope. No reaction.
b) Couldn't find the right button this time. Got lost in a black menu that made button-clicky noises when I moved the mouse.

(and since I'm on the topic of black screens; the cursor is virtually invisible when typing replies. A black cursor on a dark blue background... baaad)
