New Install of Nexuiz won't launch on Kubuntu Linux [FIXED]

Postby disturbedite » Wed Jan 24, 2007 3:54 am

Kubuntu Linux 7.04 Herd 2
Nexuiz 2.2.1 (have to wait till 2.2.2 is available for my distro)

i had nexuiz 2.2 installed from the ubuntu repos, but i had some problems and figured that uninstalling it and then reinstalling would prolly fix the problems. well, it didn't.

i unisntalled neuixz (and the supporting packages) with adept, then from console purged all remaining nexuiz files with dpkg --purge nexuiz, and then i reinstalled nexuiz (version 2.2.1) with adept. but the problem still persists.

this is the end of the console output:
Draw_CachePic: failed to load gfx/mainmenu
OpenGL Backend shutting down

i tried adding the game path to command via kde and via console, but the same error comes up! i tried pointing it to /usr/share/games/nexuiz/data, /usr/lib/games/, /usr/lib/games/nexuiz.bin, and also to /usr/games/nexuiz (since i didn't know which to use) but neither worked.

its a fresh install with all the files from the previous installation removed. this prolly shouldn't be happening. a bug maybe?

could someone please help me out? lemme know if more info is required. i say that cuz it seems like it should be something that i can "fix" just by adding to the launch command. thanks

The version of Nex in the feisty repos is maintained not by Ubuntu, but is auto-synced from Debian - at this stage in developing 7.04 it is unlikely that any further updates will be made before release :s.

The package in the repos depends on nexuiz-data, but not on nexuiz-server and only recommends nexuiz-music - you could try installing them as well if you are determined to get the repo version working.

However, as Nexuiz is under moderately heavy development, I wouldn't recommend you use the Ubuntu (Debian) .debs, but instead install directly from the Nexuiz download section. I usually use a user-install with the game installed in ~/Nexuiz, as it makes updating simpler (plus it gives me the opportunity to teach my kids how to install apps without root privileges).

With this setup I know that I can launch Nex with a simple
Code: Select all
ian@tux:~$ Nexuiz/nexuiz-linux-686-glx -basedir Nexuiz/ +exec my.cfg
and know that it should work. I use a seperate config file ("my.cfg") for all my customised stuff, which is the "+exec my.cfg" bit - this is NOT necessary though.

Your error message does look like a path problem though - try reporting a bug on launchpad.

And what do you launch? is there a shellscript or just a precompiled binaries?

i use the shell script in kde. but as i said, i also tried launching it from command line. the version in the repos uses a shell script to launch.

@Vendor

i do have those other packages installed.
i like your suggestion, i think i'll try that. set up an install that makes it easier to launch and update.

Well first of all.. that ARE your problems with Nexuiz? Does 3d accelerated opengl work for you? Does [code]glxinfo | grep -i 'direct\|string'[code] say direct rendering: yes ? If no you will have to install drivers that offer 3d accelerated opengl..

i can already tell you that it doesn't. i have a crappy intel i845 onboard chip. i play nexuiz with low graphics settings. but i can confirm that it doesn't with the command.

UPDATE: i finally figured out my problem!

after the 2.2.3 release for ubuntu linux, i still had this same problem. this had me concerned.

but i managed to see in the console that nothing in the gfx/ directory was being found. i didn't know why. but then i was looking around in the different nexuiz directories and noticed something. there was an old patch in /usr/share/games/nexuiz/data that i had "manually" put there to update nexuiz. (i forget which version, i deleted it, i should have wrote it down). since the newer data pack "obseleted" the older patch, i just deleted it.

i tried nexuiz again and voila! it worked just like before.

just thought i'd post that just in case it might end up helping anyone else.
