Slow mouse movement 2.3

Postby torus » Thu May 31, 2007 11:56 am

On my machine, Nexuiz 2.3, mouse movement is abnormally slow, both in the menu, and in the game. The game is playable only with the movement speed set to max, and the cursor movement in the menu is slow even with max speed. Any ideas? Before, it was set on "6" and was fast (in game).

yes apple_mouse_noaccel 0 really needs to be the default....

this one thing will turn off ANY new Mac player because the game is basically unplayable, and it is not obvious how to change this setting!!!

Actually, no.

On a stock OS X with a normal Apple mouse, the better setting is having this at 1 because the OS X acceleration curve makes aiming impossible. Mouse feels jumpy because below a certain speed, it's really slow, and above that speed, it gets really fast at once. Also, with my 400dpi USB mouse and no extra software, 15 is a sensible sensitivity setting in the current version. The Apple Bluetooth mouse I have seems to have 400dpi too and plays the same way.

However, the players who have this problem probably already solve this acceleration problem another way - they probably are using programs like SteerMouse or USB Overdrive to make OS X use a more sane acceleration curve. Apparently USB Overdrive changing the acceleration and Nexuiz disabling it completely "bite" each other somehow.

Also note that Nexuiz isn't the only game shutting off the mouse acceleration in game - the code for doing that is actually the same as ZQuake's.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

OK, well at the very least this issue & it's solution need to be a lot more prominent.

I am using 'stock' OSX, without any other software that messes with the mouse settings, and with a generic USB mouse the game is unplayable in its default state. With no obvious fix for this, a new player is simply going to walk away.

I am all for helping to advertise and get the word out about Nexuiz - especially in the Mac community, which would be very receptive of a free, very nicely done FPS. But this one issue will turn away so many new players if they encounter this problem and the 'fix' is not easily known.

I am using a Kensington laser mouse, with no other mouse drivers. I'm going to try that command...

Well, for me the previous way was worse.

And sorry, that probably will mean no Nexuiz for Mac users then... wait some months for the next release then. We certainly won't make a hotfix for that, as it wouldn't be a fix.

Well, I am the only one in the developer team who has a Mac at all, so don't expect heavy testing for such things. At this state, Nexuiz will NEVER run well on OS X.

BTW, I just tried with the Apple mouse I got with my Mac mini (Bluetooth). Works very fine at sensitivity 9, and I have apple_mouse_noaccel 1.

In any case, use Nexuiz-SDL and complain to Apple for making such a hard to develop for operating system. Apple users just complain, and problems like this one make me not want to support OS X for Nexuiz AT ALL. It just seems to be not worth the effort.

Well as long as we do not have to do strange things to support Mac i gues it will just stay like it is.. more testers and coders with a mac would be nice though..
