System Freezes when running under Ubuntu

I'm running Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy). I followed the install instructions, but when I try to run the game I just get a black screen and mouse pointer. I can't do anything in Gnome, after this, unless I switch to a console and kill Nexuiz. Then, Gnome comes back with a resolution of 800x600. Anyhow, the main problem is that the game won't load properly.

System specs:
P4 1.8 GHz
512 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce FX 5600 (256 MB)
Matsonic motherboard with SiS chipset
kernel 2.6.12-10-686 (Ubuntu)
Nvidia glx drivers (Ubuntu)

couldn't exec config.cfg


do you also get a couple of strange pixels on screen too?

if so your install may have gone wrong. the main program cant find its component parts.

compare or find your home nexuiz directory. note the dot (.) its hidden unless using ls -a

/home/<username>/.nexuiz/data/config.cfg

@kern: that "couldn't exec config.cfg" is not serious. The file is simply not there since Nexuiz never fully loaded yet, so it did came to the point where it's writing the config.cfg.

That looks bad... Do other SDL games run? (like chromium or tuxracer?)
Is libxxf86vm1 and libsdl installed?

thx Kadaver, wasnt sure about how serious.

just that it was one of the symptoms i saw when i screwed up an install and a directory changeround. thought it may be similar.

I'm not sure what the problem was, but I decided to use a different installation method. I initially installed the game with a Loki installation package - some kind of .run file. I removed that install, and downloaded the .zip installation file from sourceforge. I extracted the game, and now it works.

But, to answer your questions:

I don't think I have any other sdl games installed. I do have libXxf86vm.so.1.0.0 in /usr/lib. And, I have various SDL libraries:

libSDL-1.2.so.0.7.1 libSDL_net-1.2.so.0

But, again, I have a new instance of the game working. I appreciate the help, guys.

Hm, so it seems like the binaries from the loki installer were somehow incompatible with your system... At least the "official" zip file works :)
Anyway i'm gonna check the loki installer and if it doesn't work here either, i'm going to send them a bug report.
