having trouble loading new maps

Postby VMOS » Thu Nov 29, 2007 10:41 pm

Hello, some servers download the maps automatically and that's grand but on some other servers it just says loading ???.??% and sticks and then after a while it might dump me into a black level
I've tried downloading the maps from http://www.nexuizninjaz.com/maps and sticking them into /.nexuis/data/dlcache with all my other maps but the game doesn't see them in there

any ideas?

I'm on ubuntu BTW
Oh my!

I've just had a look at my Nexuiz map folder, I use Kubuntu (a superior version of Ubuntu :) ) and my maps are stored in /.nexuiz/data/dlcache

I currently have 186 items, slightly over 1 GB of data in the folder.

Do you have any other maps in your dlcache folder?

If you are downloading them from www.nexuizninjaz.com, you do not have to put them in your dlcache folder. Just toss them in the .nexuiz/data folder.

Anyhow, the maps not downloading are usually server specific. The admin of said server may not have set their map download url properly.

To play online I have to put the maps into the dlcache folder. If I watch a demo or want to play a map against my bots, then the map needs to be in the parent data folder.

That's odd, are you sure this is the case? You should really put your downloaded maps in your data folder. Files in dlcache aren't loaded directly for security reasons as noted by Ronan. Yes, the files in your dlcache appear to work when you connect to a server but it's not a very efficient way to do things.

It seems to me like the application logic would go something like:

[connect to server]
1. check if map exists in data dir
2. map doesn't exist, download it
3. oh snap, it's already downloaded

So it's kinda wasting your time with that check.

I need to change my previous comment, it should have read -

I have all my maps in the dlcache folder. If I watch a demo or want to play a map against my bots, then the map needs to be in the parent data folder[/quote].

I've just moved all the maps from data/dlcache to the parent data folder. I ran Nexuiz and managed to find a new map 'red.pk3', this was downloaded to dlcache. I found another new to me map 'flipzone.pk3' which was also saved to dlcache.

I also recorded a demo of 'flipzone.pk3' and another map which I already had 'cttourney1_nex.pk3', both demos were saved in the data/demos folder.

I found I could watch both demos immediately after they were recorded. After restarting Nexuiz (pressing F10) I could watch the demo of 'cttourney1', but the demo of 'red' played without the map, ie a black background.

I don't think the above helps the original poster.

I sometimes have problems with the occasional server telling me I don't have a map, when I'm certain I do have it. I usually see a 404 in the console and sometimes a message about purchasing the map.

My lazy way, YMMV:
Code: Select all
$ pwd; ls; file dlcache data
/home/bender/.nexuiz/data
Darkzonectf.pk3 config.cfg demos evilspacectf.pk3 map-cbctf1.pk3 monk.pk3 succer_socks_r3.pk3 zion_beta_3.pk3
Figure8.pk3 config.cfg~ dlcache filsomni-0.2.pk3 map-ctf_facing_worlds_nex2.pk3 nexball.pk3 towers.pk3
autoexec.cfg controlfactor_v2r3.pk3 dm_castle.pk3 gforce2.pk3 map-ctf_greatwall_reloaded3.pk3 pyconicarenaandctf1.pk3 vitamea-v2.pk3
bloodprisonctf-1.0.pk3 crossover-1.0.pk3 dm_lastmanstanding.pk3 greatwall_remix.pk3 medivalV2.pk3 pyramidb2.pk3 wacka-wacka_r2.pk3
brokenworld_r2.pk3 ctf-onarail-b2.pk3 docs_gothic_rush.pk3 hydronexb3.pk3 mentalrespaced.pk3 screenshots waypointsprites-0.6.pk3
campaign.cfg ctf_wtf.pk3 docs_hell_incarnate.pk3 king_of_the_hill.pk3 mentalspace.pk3 spyglass-nex.pk3 xtm.cfg
capturecity-v2r1.pk3 data dusty-rbi.pk3 lavaflag-20070428.pk3 minimanq3-nex_r2.pk3 strength.pk3 xtmKB.cfg
dlcache: symbolic link to `/home/bender/.nexuiz/data'
data: symbolic link to `/home/bender/.nexuiz/data'

..and before anyone cracks wise, this is not very safe for a regular user account.
