Framerate drop when character rendered

I have experienced significant framerate drops when character (bot or online player) enters in view (is rendered). Framerate drops from 100-150 fps to 1-3 fps. I tried lowering effects, resolution, color but nothing helped - when other characters were rendered framerate was still very low. After some tweaking i have found solution - turn off vertex objects in game options screen. Now i can play :D

My configuration:
HP laptop model nx9420
ATI x1600
Intel centrino duo (core duo 1, t5400 i belive)
2GB RAM
not sure if gfx is AGP or PCI-E based

Operating System:
openSUSE 10.2 x86-64

Nexuiz version: 2.3

I had the same problem (radeon mobility 9600) , but it's now solved by installing the latest constructor drivers (fglrx 8.44.3). And I get in the same time a nice fps improvement with gl_vbo 1 (vertex buffer objects).
