Recording demos to .avi

Postby heelyjoe » Sun Jan 13, 2008 11:28 pm

Alright, I have been playing for a while with the option to record demos every time I play on. I want to go through my demos and record them all, and mix them into a movie of some sort.

The problem is that, while the demos play back fine, I cannot record them and maintain a decent frame-rate. So, I figured I would ask around here for some tips.

Is there any way that I can play the demos back at half speed and then record them? IIf that isn't an option, I guess I will try messing around with the recorder settings to see if I can fix the lag.

If anyone has any other ideas, that would be great too.

Don't use an external program to record. Open the console with shift+esc, and type "cl_capturevideo 1". This will capture what happens on the screen into a (huge) uncompressed avi file in nexuiz/data/videos. You could also bind cl_capturevideo 1 and cl_capturevideo 0 (to stop capturing) to some key with;

bind x "cl_capturevideo 1"

where x is the key.
It's preferred to use this only to capture demos, because it will try to slow down the game just enough to capture a constant fps you specify with cl_capturevideo_fps (default 30). If you try this while playing, it will just capture some frames just like an external program would.

Hope this helped :) (Be sure to record with maxed out settings if you're making a movie! :D)

It's better to double cl_capturevideo_fps and slow the video down to half speed with a video editor of your choice afterwards, because with slowmo 0.5 all sound will still play at normal speed, which sounds kinda arkward when everything else is in slow motion.

Wow, thanks for the responses guys. I had no idea there was screen recording built in... I guess I should have looked around some more before posting.

Anyway, thanks again for your help!

How do I set the format to capture from .ogv to uncompressed .avi?
I'd rather record to .avi but in Nexuiz 2.5 its set to .ogv. Can't find the command to change it :?

cl_capturevideo_ogg 0

There's a very good command/cvar searcher built-in too :P It's under Settings->misc->advanced settings.
