Black Screen And No Text Anywhere

Hey all, I have installed Nexuiz, but upon starting the game its very dark. I read a post to open a console by hitting the ` key but when I do, I think its opening the console but only the bottom half is visible on my screen, I tried entering the commands anyway, but have no clue if it was even really the console. I have been trying to set these setting thru console because on the options menu next to all the sliders, there is no text. I can see and move the sliders, but I have no clue which is which. Also when I try to exit the game, the little transparent black confirmation window that pops up, has no text in it either, I just click all over the left half and eventually I guess I hit the "OK" button. I have no special monitor, just a typical one, not even a flatscreen.

if you are not sure weither you opened the console,. try using shift + esc that should always open the console no matter where you are in the game

Hi titan. First of all your computer specs seem like your PC will have a hard time running Nexuiz really well. But if you start Nexuiz you should be able to see the menu (almost) no matter how dark the settings are. I only had problems seeing enough ingame. The menu should be ok though.

You do not have to enter those commands in the console you can also edit the config file. As you are running linux you can find it in ~/.nexuiz/data/config.cfg. The file should be created the first time Nexuiz is run and closed again. So it should exist for you. If not just create it. But this file is the normal config file, so its rewriten each time and might overwrite and delete some settings..
Or you can create the file ~/.nexuiz/data/autoexec.cfg and put those lines in there. This file is only read each time Nexuiz is started and is never touched so you can be sure this file is 'all yours'. (For example aliases have to be put into that file)

And now to the more technical things. Which version do you have installed? Pressing ` should only open then console while you are ingame. So either you have a very very old version (1.0) of Nexuiz or something else is wrong. As tChr told newer version have a fall back option, the use of shift-escape to open the console.

Do other 3D games work fine? For example TuxRacer?

It is only dark once I join an actual game, its just theres no text at all on the options menu before you enter the game, the menu with the robot looking guy standing on it....that menu, has no words anywhere, its not dark at all, just no text. I assumed I had the most recent version, I downloaded it from the homepage. I have full 3-d accelation enabled, so far all I've played on linux is neverball, but its smooth as could be, as is any Windows games I play such as Halo CE, Call Of Duty2, Need for Speed MW, and GTA San Andreas. As far as the config.cfg file, its not in the folder, its no big deal though, on the homepaeg it said all you simply had to do was unzip the game and play it, if it takes all that I'll find something else to play.

I'm sorry but we are very interested in solving this problem.. for once to make sure you can enjoy and find out how you like the game and also that we learn more about problems and maybe find workarounds to stop those problems in the future.

Can you maybe provide a screenshot of how it looks? And more information about your system? What X version are you using? I think i misread your system config. 256mb means the PC memory not the graphic memory right? How much memory does the 9200 have? It might not be enough for Nexuiz.

After your last post i'm not sure you will read this at all but you can try to start nexuiz with the command line option +gl_picmip 3 (or 5) that should lower its memory usage but also most textures will look quite ugly because of the reduced size. And i'm not sure it will help without knowing more about your system.
(yes thats a + not a - as with most other applications. Thats because gl_picmip is an internal command.. there are some 'real' command line options that use -)
