force_playermodel (aka performance boost)

Postby fronten » Thu Apr 20, 2006 10:00 pm

well, i noticed massive drops in framerate when playing with larger number (say 5 and up) of other players.

compared to quake 3 or UT there is stull much to improve performancewise..

anyway: maybe it would help to have a console command, to FORCE ONE SINGLE PLAYER MODEL FOR ALL PLAYERS ? (having this a low poly count model would be fine too)

and yes: i already did (and use) any of the other tweaks suggested.

[amd athlon xp 1800, 512mb ram, ati 9200 64mb, win xp.]
[framerate (lowest settings) average 70-40 fps, dropping to 10-20 with more players]

No, that's currently not possible. There is a server option that forces a default model for all players, but there is no option to do that client side.
(it's an engine limitation, it would be possible to make such an option, but that would need another ugly hack)

umm, ok..

maybe you know another fix for the big performance drop with many players?

(no, the players dont have to be visible to have the frame rate dropping)

.. a way to lower the overall polycount (dont think this is it)?

PS: just to give you a hint for comparism:
with 3 players i have about 50-80fps; 6 players drop it to 15-30 fps - which is nearly unplayable. [all that using the nexuiz-sdl.exe with the lowest quality config and nogibs.pk3)

PPS: i actually found this thread: i might have the same problem.

even if you can't fix this bug.. please give us more options to gain performance!

you have my sympathy.
i get similar drop in performance, similar system. i have nvidia tho. ok its only the 5200fx or whatever but in particular map 14 cripples my sys. no idea why. map 12 always seems laggy too.

ive all the options turned as low as possible, but facts have to be faced: if you want to play cpu/graphics intensive games, you need the hardware.

cheapest/easiest fix is to leave the server and join one with fewer players.

thanx..

infact i don't think it is to blame on the hardware.. other games run fine with even more people and higher settings.

Hey Ed, your 'hint' is helpfull as shit. Get a brain.

You did ask for ways of improving performance didn't you.

Anyway, I won't resort to getting childish about it, I'll just move on to talking about something clever instead, like the measurement problem. Who's with the many worlds interpretation?

i guess you were joking.

as this does not seem to be a hardware problem, the solution for it should not be hardware, don't you think?

although it might help buying a new 3dcard.

I currently have a ati9800pro and its ok for Nexuiz, though there are some spots in the maps that perform really bad (for example if i loadup nexdm06 so that i'm alone in the map, standing at the rocketlauncher looking to nexpowerup gives me 40fps with low settings). I suppose the 9200 is even worse so it might indeed be a hardware problem.
I switched to linux those days and atis drivers are worse there then in windows. I really have hoped the 'getting slower and slower' was just 'the normal windows thing' because the windows installation is really old by now. But i realized it was the bad drivers that made it slower and slower with each driver update. So i'll buy a new nvidia card today :)
