Strange graphics corruption on intel graphics

Postby madcrow » Tue Mar 25, 2008 12:46 pm

I have a job with a lot of downtime, so I downloaded Nexuiz because I figure that since it's based on a modded Quake 1 engine, it ought to work nicely on the crappy integrated graphics cards if I turn off a bunch of the fancy extras. And sure enough, it does (I'm getting around 50-60 FPS on the crappy old i865 integrated chip on a crappy old P4)

Still, there is one HUGE problem: especially after map changes, the game is prone to developing some odd thing where it the games and the console are flickering back and forth quickly and the whole thing becomes ugly and unplayable. I actually went back and tried "vanilla" GLquake and it has the same problem (but even worse, it starts right up with that problem from the beginning)

This is CLEARLY a longstanding incompatibility between GLQuake and the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chipset, but it would be nice if Nexuiz could fix it...

I think its more like a incompatibility between the chipset and opengl specs :) Not sure if Nexuiz or rather the engine can do much about it. There were some changes to the rendering to help with mac problems, maybe they also help with that. Try looking up the hotfix or wait for Nexuiz 2.4.1.
In the mean time it might be a good idea to see if there are new drivers available for your chipset..

The systems already have the final drivers to support the i865 chipset... I doubt it's a problem with the OpenGL compliance, because Q2 and Q3-based games work fine. It's only games using Quake 1-derived engines that seem to fail...

That does not prove its NOT a opengl-spec thing. Most drivers are MADE to run quake3 no matter if spec conform or not.. Even mesa can run quake3 thought there are still huge opengl bugs in it..
Well you could to disable opengl 2.0 shader support in the video options. or was it effects..

Did that already... As I said, even vanilla GLquake has this problem...

There is/was a bug in intel's GMA950 driver that's causing weird flickering. No idea if it's the same problem with your drivers but the following work around might help if it is: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopi ... 4811#14811
