Player keeps running even when no button is pressed

Postby Aaron_H » Fri May 09, 2008 12:23 pm

Hi all,

Sometimes, (not very often) I have a problem where I'm playing a game online and all of a sudden the player keeps moving even when I'm not pressing any button on the keyboard.. It goes away after a while (not sure how long), but then might come back later on.

It doesn't really annoy me as such, but it is just a minor problem which stops the game being as fun as it could be. :)

My system specs are:
Pentium 4, 3.2GHz CPU,
3GB RAM,
AGP BFG nVidia 7800 GS OC (256MB memory),
Fedora Linux 8, running Nexuiz 2.4 from the main site (running the SDL version)
With the latest kernel and nvidia drivers (updated from the livna repo)
The mouse is a Razer Copperhead and the keyboard is a crappy Packard Bell OEM one (had it for about 8 years)

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Is fedora (or rather YOU) using gnome? I had some problems with the gnome-screensaver.. See here: http://forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?p=34151#34151

Yes, I'm using GNOME.

I'll try disabling the screensavers and see if that helps.
Can't see how it would be a problem though, since a screensaver normally runs if there's no input to the computer. I'd imagine there's a fair bit of input though when you're playing an fps. :P

Joysticks are disabled by default in 2.4 so they should no longer interfere.
You are right about a lot of info during gaming but remember you are playing in fullscreen and the game grabs the mouse and video input so X never sees all that input..

could it be a latency issue? What kind of ping do you have? also, does this happen when playing a local game?

This could be very well caused by packet loss. In that case, hammering on the jump button sometimes helps here. :)

Woah, lots of replies.
I'll answer them in order..

- I do not have a joystick plugged in.
- My ping is normally pretty low on most servers I play on (around 30ms) although I can't remember if I get the same problem on local games.

I have tried disabling the gnome-screensaver and so far I've had no problems.

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. :)
