If you still have the option (on other computer) you could download knoppix: http://knopper.net/knoppix/
Its a live/rescue linux CD what is easy to use and very helpful in such cases. It runs completly off the CD so it will not touch your system. At least worth trying.

Nope, no option. The infernal contraption can't even make it that far. I guess we just have to roll the dice of fate and see what happens.

So what do we learn? Get urself an external HD in sufficient time and be safe :?

PS: IMHO a decent VGA would be more effective for Nexuiz than more RAM btw.

Well, the computer was finally taken in for repairs.

Also, there has been a slight change of plans. We are only going to have 512 megabytes of RAM installed instead since it is apparently a lot cheaper.

Now, I didn't get to talk to the technicians, but apparently, Ed's guess is the closest. I was told there was something screwy with the voltages or some such thing, and that they are going to replace the power supply and the motherboard. I think.

I was told it should take about a week for them to repair it.

Apparently, they have to order some parts.

It could be worse, really.

Previously, it took them a week to replace a bad hard drive.

Well, I finally got my computer back.

We only had 512 of RAM installed since it was significantly cheaper, and we also blew it out with the air compressor (they wanted to charge $20 to do it), and we also installed another fan.

Just in time for summer vacation, too. I started hooking up my consoles out of desperation.

Oh goddamnit.

They done fucked up.

Sound only plays through the right channel, and whatever the hell they installed has a wimpier processor, a 1.25 GHz one instead of the 2.08 GHz one that it is supposed to have.
