Mac OS 10.5.3 Possible Bug?

Postby Waiting4nAngel » Sun Jun 15, 2008 9:35 pm

I'm really not sure if this is a computer problem, or a game/engine issue - I do work for Apple, and I can't see this being an OS issue, but I don't like to rule out the unexpected.

Whenever I'm playing on single player, I'll be making progress through the current objectives, playing against the various bots, and for some strange reason, my screen goes black followed by my computer restarting seconds later. I thought it COULD be a problem with the current map, however it has now happened on 3 of my single player maps, once during each level. A thought crossed my mind and had me thinking; could it be that the OS cursor is not locked in place during gameplay? Perhaps the cursor is moving around the OS menus and my clicks to fire and such are somehow selecting restart through the menu, and clicking the following menus after so much movement and so many clicks...

I highly doubt that's the true problem, cuz nothing else in my OS has changed, or opened after the restart. I just can't figure out what this could be, other than an engine error, or perhaps and graphics card overload of some kind.

Mac OS 10.5.3
1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Intel GMA 950

This is a standard Mac Mini Intel Core Duo with an HP L1906 monitor.

If anyone could provide any information on this subject, I would really appreciate it. I found this game a while ago before the last patch, and it wouldn't run smoothly at all, but now that I've revisited it, I've fallen in love with it and labeled it as my UT2k4 replacement. This game is genius and I don't want it to have any problems on my box.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, this sounds more like an OS or System problem.

Either there is a kernel panic (possibly somehow triggered by the game engine) or there is an overheating problem (not uncommon for smaller than MiniATX style case designs).

The mouse, as far as the OS is concerned during gameplay should be static (or at least nearly static - slight movements per frame that reset to center) at the center of the screen, the only way you should be able to interact with the system menu is if you are in windowed mode.

Unfortunately I don't know MacOSX well enough to tell you where to look for a possible kernel dump, but it would be best advised if you found a program that can monitor CPU temperatures (you mentioned you have a mac mini, so no dedicated GPU).

Also, if you could find some sort of CPU stress testing application (once again, I'm not familiar with ones for Mac), to see if any of them force your system to restart, that would be where you can start looking.
