Nexuiz server

Postby potatoj316 » Sat Jul 26, 2008 2:59 am

I am trying to create a dedicated server on ubuntu server 8.04.1. I installed the nexuiz-server package but I dont want to actually install nexuiz because that requires that I install a lot of graphical programs that I dont really want to install on my server. The directions that are included with the server package say to put some files in ~/.nexuiz but I dont have the ~/.nexuiz folder because I dont have nexuiz actually installed. Is it possible to install the dedicated server without the game? If so how?

yes, it is. Just run the server and it should make the ~/.nexuiz dir for you.

how do I run the server? I installed the debian packages, are you familiar with those? Do I still need to download anything from the website?

To list all files in an installed Debian package, use "dpkg -L package-name". You can probably use "dpkg -L nexuiz-server | egrep 'games|bin'" to find the name of the server binary. ("man binary-name" after that.) To see the documentation of a Debian package, check out the /usr/share/doc/package-name directory.

so this means there is no download from the nexuiz website needed?

Ok, I tried to run the nexuiz-server binary but I am getting some problems. It tells me that "couldnt exec quake.rc" It also cant exec default.cfg, config.cfg, and autoexec.cfg. it also tells me that it fails at trying to load a bunch of libraries. It did not create a ~/.nexuiz directory.

yeah, I already read that. My questions were basically based on that. I don't know if I actually have to download those files or not because I already installed nexuiz-server (debian package) If I still do have to download those files where do I put them. I do not have a .nexuiz directory.(yes I realize its hidden) I can always create one but if that is all I have to do then why does it have to be in .nexuiz instead of wherever I want it to be.

I tried running nexuiz-server in the terminal but it keeps getting stuck in different places. Usually after a couldn't load texture. I read that these errors really aren't a problem but it is getting stuck nevertheless.

After the server is up and running how do I know? How do I play games on it? Does my server connect to the server that lists all the other servers?

How did you install the package? Sounds like there are dependencies missing, which usually happens when installing a package manually. A manual install is probably not what you want. If that's the case, just uninstall the package and get it from an official Ubuntu repository instead through apt-get/aptitude.
