Bug Report: Dualcore Problem

Postby Andre » Fri May 26, 2006 6:55 pm

Hello,
My system is an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ with a XFX 7900GT 1500
The Problem ist, if i run Nexuiz @1280*1024 and all effects I can't play it with no more than 10 FPS, if I go in the TaskManager an give the nexuiz.exe to core1 for example, the game runs normally.

so you have the solution to your problem :)
afaik in order to take advantage of multiprocessor capacities, an application has to be coded in that way (operations are divided in multiple processus or something like that... i'm not specialist enough to explain it correctly)

@obi_wan: darkplaces is single threaded, so it can't use multiple cores/cpus.

@Andre: i guess it's either a problem with windows itself or a mainboard driver. Nexuiz is running just fine under Linux on my Centrino Duo notebook.

that's what i meant ;) :)
imho dualcore is a way to be able to run several applications together more confortable, not a way to run better one application. afaik there are not many applications that use multiprocessor capabilities. Actually, even if i work with many professional softwares, the only things that really use the two processors of my computer are 3D rendering & video rendering (i did write video rendering, not video encoding ;) ).

Yes, maybe it runs without problems on a linux system, if i had enough time to work in with linux, I would use it

This is actually a problem with your video card drivers trying to use dual core optimizations. There are cases it can work, and cases where it won't... this is one where it won't evidently.

I don't recall having trouble quite as bad as you, but the dual core options did definately slow down many games and applications for me.

Could people with dualcore problems please take a look at this and report if it does help or anything?

Code: Select all
This hotfix also addresses the following issues on computers that have multiple processors that support processor performance states:
• Possible decrease in performance on single-threaded workloads when processor performance states are using demand-based switching

this does sound interesting..

since the version 2.0 was released, the problem exists no longer :)

@esteel: the link you postet is not very interesting for me, because I don't run SP2 and C'n'Q is also not activatet (nonsense with overclocking  )
