[SOLVED] Nexuiz on Xubuntu 8.10 Getting 3 FPS

Postby Ha_Ha_Ur_Dead » Sun Nov 09, 2008 2:29 am

I have a laptop that I recently loaded xubuntu 8.10 onto. I have Nexuiz on all of my other computers, but i can't seem to get it working on this one or my mac. I'll post the mac problem in a different topic (eventually), but right now i'm just trying to get it working on my laptop.

I can't really tell you the specs, because i'm very new to linux and I don't have much of an idea of how to find anything like that lol. I know that it has 1G ram, and about 22G of free hd space, but that's about as much as i can find. If more info will be useful, please just direct me to where I can find the info.

As it says in the title, i'm getting 3 fps. Not only in the game, but also in the title/startup screen. I have all my settings at the lowest possible. I also made sure that Desktop Effects isn't enabled (I couldn't even find it, so i'm assuming I don't have it enabled... but if someone could direct me to where I could find out for sure that would be fantastic). I followed instructions to increase fps from the FAQ (by putting it at the lowest settings possible), and it increased it, but to 3 fps (it was at like 1 before rofl). Also did a few terminal commands that a few people recommended to me, such as gxlinfo, but I really am not sure what to look for in the output...

[EDIT]: Also forgot to mention that Nexuiz takes up 100% CPU Usage..

Any help is appreciated =)

As Div said System Settings -> Desktop -> Desktop Effects = OFF
The specs should be written in the docs, which you should have got when buying pc

using 'glxinfo | grep direct' will give easily understandable results.
try 'jockey-gtk' to install any possible video card drivers.

Thanks for the replies!

Alien, I tried that extension, but there is no desktop option under settings. I was able to find a desktop option under a different extension, but there was no option for desktop effects.

Thanks Dave, i'll try that and post the results.

Also forgot to mention in my other post that when Nexuiz runs, it takes up 100% CPU usage.

Ok... results from Dave's suggestions:

nick@billy:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

I have no idea if direct rendering should be on or off, and if it should be off, how to turn it off.. so just let me know =P.

When i typed in jockey-gtk, a window popped up saying "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." Obviously didn't fix it xD.

Also, found the extension I am looking under for Desktop Effects:

Applications > Settings > Settings Manager > Desktop

But there's nothing about Desktop Effects under it. I checked under add/remove programs, and it said that I can install desktop effects... So I'm assuming I don't have it.

Thanks for responses so far. Any other suggestons?

well don't I feel retarded. It was simple driver problem, had nothing to do with Nexuiz. Well... i'm glad it's fixed xD. Thanks to those who attempted to help me lol.
