Yes, it certainly did

, and the next version is going to take even more of a performance hit

. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found Tremulous.
You should not be so fast with your ratings. I guess you have not seen the new engine in action.. I yesterday tested Nexuiz 1.5 (the CURRENT version) with the engine included and the current development engine. I got 92fps with the 1.5 engine vs 132fps with the current development engine. Thats a rise of 40fps or almost 50% MORE!!!
And on the other hand its also not completly right that the next version will take "even more for a performance hit". To create bump and gloss effects (those things that make a map look cool

) the engine needs information about the light near the texture.. in the current engine that can only be done with the realtime lights active. Those are slow and are not placed troughout the map as this would make things very very slow. So you currently get bump and gloss effects only at high costs and in small parts of the maps.
The next version does include deluxemapping. This thing does not need realtime lights to create those effects but the normal lightmap (if the map is compiled in a special way). So while its true that those effects will indeed be a small performance hit its still WAY faster because you can disable the very slow realtime lights and the map will still look LOTS better then right now.
Yeah i did post a few screenshots that show very low fps but those have been with realtime lights enabled. This makes things slow but it would not look much different with RTLights disabled but it would be much faster. So to sum it up the next version can look way better then the current but still be faster

.
