strange performance problems

Postby 1137 » Sun Jun 04, 2006 5:08 pm

I encounter strange performance problems while playing Nexuiz. My fps is about 170 but it drops to about 15 when I enter bigger rooms or see another players. Turning off all video effects or changing resolution from 1600x1200 to 640x480 gave a few addtional frames but didn't solve the problem either. Another 3d games work without any problems.

I use emerged and compiled Nexuiz 1.5.0 on Gentoo but also tried a binary from nexuiz.com which gave even worse performance.
My graphics card is GeForce4 MX 460,
CPU: AMD Athlon 2200+
RAM: 1GB

Any ideas? :)

Framerate drop when entering large / complex rooms and/or with many player on screen is normal. Not saying that there is nothig to do abt it ofc =) Im not familiar with the xakt specs of the gf4 mx 460, but is sounds like its in the "low range" when it comes to nexuiz and preformace. this means you will need to tweek some other settings then those accessable through the menus to get things flowing as good as possible. another nice thing to use it limiting the max fps to avoid huge framerate drops. this is done with the cvar cl_maxfps. Take a look at this post http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=349 for LordHavoc's list of recommended vid cars and tip on how to get some more fps on the slower ones. this post http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?p=90#90 will give you even more info on how to get more frames.

Hope this helps. Welcome to the game and to the community.

<Diablo> the nex is a "game modification"
<Diablo> quake1 never had a weapon like that.
<Vordreller> there was no need for anything over 4GB untill Vista came along
<Samua>]Idea: Fix it? :D
<Samua>Lies, that only applies to other people.

Using low performance settings script helped a bit. But I still consider switching back to q1 :) I like Nex but I don't know why game based on darkplaces engine and with rather simple graphics performs much worse than Americas Army or Castle Wolfenstein.

Thanks for help :)

Well of cource its normal that fps go down slightly when the engine has to draw more stuff because of players or a big room.. But i think the problem is just that THIS fps drop is not normal. Yes i know there are a few people with those problems and it seems Urmel is the only one i know that somehow fixed those problems on his computer.
You can read about this here: http://www.forums.alientrap.local/viewtopic.php?t=47
From what Urmal said It seems that some computers have problems with their agp bus..
So PLEASE tell us if you also have a AGP graphic card..

Well i too have problems with my NVidia 6600GT card on some of the really big maps like nexdm16 and 17 with 8 players and lots of Gibs where FPS go down to 40.. Part of this problem are the gibs, those are really bad ones. The next version of Nexuiz that is due in about 10days will have much better gibs and will also run faster on most maps :)

Well, I don't believe You actually. Except You are talking about games from the nineties.

Yup, get a less stoneage VGA, sry. wtf?

Do look into the "nexuiz - performance tips/recommended video cards" topic by LordHavoc.

I'm sure You can solve Your fps jittering by installing a recent VIA 4in1 driver with AGP 3.0 support as almost every mainboard for Athlon XP CPU's have the VIA KTxxx chipset.
