SDL=lag, GLX=no lag

Postby jkohen » Sat Jun 17, 2006 1:43 am

I also have a Radeon 9600 card and I'm having the laggy mouse problem when running the SDL version on Linux. The GLX version does not seem to suffer from this problem, which in the SDL version not only affects the menu, but also seems to affect the gameplay to a leser extent.

I also have an AC97 card, and therefore the starting script adds -sndspeed 48000 to the command line. I found that the SDL version also suffers from some audio artifacts/lag in the menu, and maybe also in game (I don't quite remember now).

I don't know if it's of any relevancy, but my card's refresh rate is fixed to 60 Hz, as it is a notebook and I'm using the LVDS screen. The in game refresh rate with all preferences set to factory settings is between 30 and 40 fps for both versions.

Edited: to remove supposed workaround for the SDL version that was just me running the GLX version accidentally.

The -sndspeed 48000 should no longer be needed as the sound engine now detects the sound cards better. And if -glx does run better for you then thats fine. sdl is still far from being a perfect library :)

Great to know, but the nexuiz-linux.sh adds -sndspeed 48000 for my hardware by default, and also always uses the SDL binary. Moreover, the original poster was having this same problem, and I bet that many people will be using this script to launch the game and thus risk having this same problem.

Cheers.

I'm not sure what you mean.. are you saying the removing the -sndspeed 48000 did help?

No, not at all. Read my first post in this thread, that's the one that counts. After that I was just telling you that this command-line switch is added by default by the bundled launch script, which also defaults to use the SDL version. It might be a good idea to change it to use the GLX version if, as you said, the SDL version is a bit buggier.

Problem is that its hard to know which one will run better. It does depend on the system. the sdl version would not be default if it were worse then the other one :) There was even a version (think 1.5) that did only ship the sdl version. Maybe it is a good idea to add scripts for both versions now that again both are included..

The default switch is still valid though not really needed anymore. It should not do any harm..

All I did to solve this problem was go to Settings -> Video and then untick the box which said "Use OpenGL 2.0 shaders". After that the problem went away entirely.

I have a really bad mouse lag, too. I'm using Nexuiz 2.5.1 SDL for Linux. The problem doesn't go away even when I set every single option in "Settings > Video" and "Settings > Effects" to the lowest possible setting! The lag is in every single level except for Level 2 in the Nexuiz 2.5 campaign. The lag never shows up when you first start up Nexuiz. It only shows up when you enter a level.

I'm using a Mobile Intel 965 Graphics Accelerator, 2GB of RAM, and anIntel Pentium Dual-Core
Processor. This lag makes many levels completely unplayable because cannot move my player around
properly. Can somebody help me???

Mobile Intel 965 Graphics Accelerator

Here's the problem.

Sorry, but Nexuiz needs more GPU power. Maybe you could try Damn Small Nexuiz instead:
