Can't seem to get my server stable...

Postby Raven » Mon Jan 26, 2009 10:14 pm

Hy there,

I can't seem to get my server stable. Clients have constant packet loss of 1 and sometimes a peek of 5 or more. I've tried some settings, but the only ones (that I know of) that would be of any influence are sys_ticrate which is on 0.03125 and sv_maxrate/rate which are on 100.000 at the moment.
I've tried several settings, like ticrate 0.01 or 0.02 which made it REALLY bad, and 0.05 which seems similar to the recommended ticrate of 0.03125. I also tried different rate-settings, ranging from 10.000 - 100.000. It did totally nothing...
I even shut down my firewall for a short while, it didn't seem to do anything.
I pinged my server to see if there was any packet loss, forgot I was pinging and came back to it like 2 hours later :D Aborted the proces, it displayed the results: Not a single packet was lost, So I think it's save to say the PL is not due to the connection to my server :)

I'm all out of clues now. My server has ran multiple halflife-based gameservers before, with no problems what so ever. Now nexuiz server is about the only thing running on it besides Apache, ftp and mysql. (all pretty much personal use)

I also noticed multiple files to start a server, like nexuiz-linux-686-glx and
nexuiz-linux-686-sdl. What are those for?

Anyways, hope you guys are able to help me out here...

Specs:
Hardware: 2x2.4Ghz Xeon, 3,5GB mem
Connection: Backbone 100mbit
OS: Ubuntu 8.04
Nexuiz: 2.4.2

Welcome to the forum !

Try increasing the value of cl_netfps on the clients and see what happens, here I have it set to 70. sys_ticrate 0.05 should be fine. Those executables were made for launching Nexuiz clients, if you want to start a server use nexuiz-linux-[arch]-dedicated.

- when the server is running and you run top what CPU total usage do you get (reason why I ask is to see whether enough CPU is left for the nex server anyway)
- when you enter status into the server console, what values related to the CPU is it telling you? (Have a look at the "timing: ...") - if the max offset is only a few ms no 0% are lost, you can be quite sure that it has something to do with your connection to the clients who play on it

I'm using the script included with nexuiz, it uses the dedicated executable.
As for the cl_netfps, I'll try it when I'm home tonight (Can't reach my server from work :/). But I guess it can't be the solution anyways. I can't expect people to adjust their settings to be able to play on my server.

I definatly try that! But like I said, the server is running pretty much nothing and server-connection is on a backbone in the netherlands... My home-connection doesn't have problems with other servers that have a ping lower then 100.

Let's see what happens when I try the above things. I'll post them here tonight.
So far, thanx for all your help!

I hate to say it, but (unless you have 100% CPU load while the server is running) it seems to be a problem with your ISP.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Top with 3 people on the server:

Mem: 500MB out of 3,5GB in use
CPU: No more then 3%

Like I said, server is doing almost nothing :)

However, I did some more pinging tonight and there does seem to be some PL after all... Still trying to figure out where it exactly goes wrong...

cl_fps 70 only made it worse for me to play.

Thank you very much so far!

I just tried one of the "Raven" servers (Minsta). Seemed okay for me. Some pl, but not much.
