Yeah, I know, brilliant topic name. I've been goofing around in Nexuiz for a week or so now (taking a break from Urban Terror) and I'm troubled by some stuff.

My ping where I'm now living isn't much worse (if it all) than it ever was, but playing on the Georgia DM server I'm seeing problems all over. I jump - but my jump isn't recorded. I switch to laser and fire (I'd assume anyone reading this knows I have my timing down pat) and either I don't get my laser or I do but don't get the fire. The movement is jerky as hell. And assorted other weirdness, which I'd generally chalk up to lag or packet loss, but lagometer reports what I'd expect - not much lag, the odd (but not horrid) spike, no packet loss.

Then I stroll over to one of the Ninjaz servers - and the problems are worse by a factor of four, but again, doesn't seem to be a case of poor connection.

Granted, I've been away since 2.3 (well, I followed svn for a while after the mark), but something is seriously weird here. Also, I'm running under Windows now, but considering how flawless and responsive my other opengl games are, I wouldn't think that would matter.

Playing offline: performance seems generally good, but with a few bots on some big maps I get stutters and yes, I'm running on just one core. Nothing of the sort ever occurred under 2.3.

Box runs winxp, has a 2.3 pentium d (dual), 4 gigs ram, nv 8800 gt, x-fi, and lots of whirring fans and neon lights, etc.

So, what am I missing and what do you suggest?

One thing that makes me wonder: Why are you running Nexuiz on 1 core? Have you tried with 2? I remember there was an old version where there was trouble with 2 cores, but that's long ago (I already forgot how long).

Another thing: don't trust the lagometer generally, and NEVER trust the netgraph!

Well first of all you confuse me a bit. You mention other games that are more responsive.. this makes it sound less like an networking but rendering or input issue. Stuff like vsync on and triple buffering is known to cause slight input lag. Or maybe other games just render at higher fps and seem smoother? Enable the fps counter in the menu and keep an eye on it.

If its really networking issues it would be best to start with a fresh config. If you have updated and keept your config maybe some settings are at 'currently' bad settings.

Generally a ping of around 80 and fps higher then 80 should be sufficient to enjoy the game. If you have indeed input problem, you can also try gl_finish 1 .. that will make the renderer a bit slower but CAN fix input problems. Also in the native versions (nexuiz.exe -glx nexuiz.app) you can en/disable the OS mouse acceleration, this can also feel bad.

@Urmel: I have yet to come across any opengl game that doesn't suffer the occasional stutter running across both cores. I tried the latest Nexuiz both ways and yes, it was occasionally stuttering on both cores. To test I ran no bots, loaded up mikeCTF ("like spinning plates") and just tried fast-as-possible flags runs. On both cores it would hiccup every few seconds, on one core it would not. That matters settled for me. It may be newer dualies support better scheduling at the firmware layer. Send me three hundred bucks and I'll test that theory. ;)

I never use either vsync or triple buffering.

I cap Urban Terror at 120 fps, I can run it higher. In Nexuiz I don't cap it and I'm seeing an average 600 fps.

Tried all of that before I posted, sorry. I figured you guys would remember how thorough I am. :)

Yep, tried gl_finish 1, never helped. Tried both glx and sdl versions. All mouse accel is disabled, both at driver level and in game. Also, I am just using the glx version now, since the sdl binary adds a lot (500+ ms) of input lag and causes wild fluctuations in frame rate under load.

Sounds strange.. nvidia drivers have a setting to disable 'multi threading optimizations' .. for some reason it often helps to DISABLE those. I have no other great idea though.
Except trying a really clean install (without any .pk3 files added), but i doubt those affect input problems.

Doesn't appear to exist as a standard driver option anymore, but I used RivaTuner and disabled it that way. No difference. It really is unplayable like this.

Oh, the dropping input thing: it's not a once-in-a-while deal, it's pretty much constant, with zero packet loss and a ping ~ 100. I can't bunny-hop, period. Sometimes if I tap my jump an extra time or two while airborne it will see the let-go-pressed-again events but that's just one more grief I could do without.

I'm beginning to recall why I faded on Nexuiz. Love the movement and style, hate these horrid glitches.
