Game running slowly despite lowering settings...

Postby darkstrike » Sat Feb 14, 2009 10:23 pm

Hey all, I've got a little mystery I was wondering if you could help me solve...

I have a computer here at home that I'm trying to install Nexuiz on in order to play LAN games at home. It's not a very high-spec machine, but it does meet the minimum system requirements for Nexuiz and in fact, almost the recommended requirements as well.

Stats:
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53ghz
Video Card: AGP Nvidia Quadro2 Pro w/ 64mb RAM (The Quadro2 was a Professional level card that was more expensive than the GeForce2, so it should be better in theory?)
RAM: 768mb DDR
OS: Windows XP Service Pack 3
Sound: Generic Realtek AC'97 On-board

I originally tried running it in 1024x768 on normal graphics settings....lagged like mad, so I lowered the effects to low, still 1024x768 resolution. This still lagged to the point of unplayability...I changed the game to windowed mode in 800x600 resolution with all effects and video settings on the lowest I can set them to....STILL is unplayably slow.

I do have one or two other games on it, including a shooter that has higher system requirements than Nexuiz (Hidden and Dangerous 2 is the name of it) and it plays them fine on normal graphics settings.

Why is Nexuiz running so slowly? Any ideas? I'd appreciate the help!

Would you mind telling HOW? :) In case someone runs into the same problem afterwards that would be really helpful!

The Quadro 2 Pro is actually near identical in hardware to the Geforce 2 Ti, the second most powerful Geforce 2 below the Ultra but more powerful than the standard Geforce 2 GTS. It shares the 250/400MHz clock speeds.

Performance wise, in hardware it's identical so if you softmod through the BIOS or by driver hacks then you have an identical card. Where the difference may come is in drivers. The Quadro drivers target a different market and this may actually hurt performance in games. The drivers for Quadro cards are also released less frequently as they have to undergo much more stringent testing to pass the various validation programs for some CAD software. This is also applied to the hardware which partly explains the extra cost as well, the validation is a lot tougher. This also goes to explain why professional level cards always follow the reference design.

There have been times before when it's been said that professional level cars will actually perform better than their gaming counterparts. This is in most cases not true and you will normally get either the same performance or possibly worse.
