Screen resolution in Ubuntu 9.04

Postby michal.fabik » Tue Apr 28, 2009 12:15 pm

Hi, I've just upgraded to Ubuntu Jaunty and now I get black stripes on either side of the screen when playing Nexuiz. It does seem perfectly logical, since my default resolution is 1440x900 and I have Nexuiz set to 800x600 but it didn't happen before I upgraded Ubuntu - I had Nexuiz set to 800x600 and still the view covered the whole of my screen. Changing Nexuiz resolution to 1440x900 does fix the problem, but it also increases the resolution which I'd like to avoid to maintain a reasonable framerate. My setup:

try setting the resolution back to 800x600 and:

con_width 1440
con_height 900

There aren't any cvars called that - just vid_conwidth and vid_conheight, but they only make 2D stuff (basically just HUD and console) appear smaller (or bigger if I set them lower than actual resolution and then vid_width and vid_height but changing them is just like changing the resolution in the menu. I did try to set the cvars to 960 and 600 respectively, to get my desired aspect ratio, but vid_restart will revert them to 800x600. (This also applies to 1280x800 and 1440x900 although 1280x800 is even in the menu.)

Code: Select all
VID_Restart: changing from fullscreen 800x600x16bpp, to fullscreen 1280x800x16bp
p.
Initializing Video Mode: fullscreen 1280x800x16x60hz
Loading OpenGL driver libGL.so.1
GL_VENDOR: Tungsten Graphics, Inc
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20090326 2009Q1 RC2 x86/MMX/SSE2
GL_VERSION: 2.0 Mesa 7.4
Chose a similar video mode 1440x900 instead of the requested mode 1280x800

What desktop resolution are you running? I know Intel chips have a strange thing where they don't have resolutions built into the BIOS so you have to run a wrapper to enable some other resolutions.

Have you also tried the i810 driver?

My default desktop resolution is 1440x900 (Nexuiz runs fine but too slow with that resolution, that's why I want to set it lower.) Are you sure using the i810 driver is a good idea? According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/i810 I should be using the "intel" driver, which I am - see my xorg.conf above.

I think I get what's going on here, it's one of the ideas I had before. The video BIOS does not support 1280x800 however may have been patched to use 1440x900. You can however patch the BIOS to make 1280x800:

I've done this previously. It's Intel's fault for releasing chips that natively support such a tiny number of resolutions.
