Nexuiz in Windows (XP) slower than in Linux (Ubuntu)

Postby nightwing » Tue May 26, 2009 6:36 am

Hello.

I play nexuiz in ubuntu normally. Now I've tried to start it in windows. But I found out, that on my machine (Core 2 Duo 1,7 GHz, ATI X1250), it's a lot slower, than in ubuntu. Also when I reduce all graphical effects and resolution, it's not even nearly as fast as in ubuntu. And in linux I have activated all effects and full res (1280x800).

Can somebody give me a hint, what went wrong in windows?

Regards

In windows you have old/defunct drivers.

well, if it is a laptop, you are likely to have drivers dated before the time you bought the machine.
On Windows, ATi drivers refuse to install, while on linux, your card should be supported by drivers versioned 9.3 and older. They are more performant than the old windows drivers. If you want equal results, use the free radeon driver on linux ;)

I think, you misunderstood me...
In linux the performance is better than in windows. But I do have the same driver version in windows than in linux - I tested that.

Same version doesn't mean same drivers. I'm not really surprized, although it could be the other way round as well. Obviously the Linux driver doesn't support certain effects, while the windows driver does. This affects the performance.

Also check if Nexuiz uses both CPU cores. Depending on the mainboard chipset, this isn't guaranteed at all.

It's probably driver related. Starting I think with the 8.9 drivers, raw 3D performance has been pretty much the same with both driver sets, so make sure your Windows driver is current. With my cards (both using the same driver versions) performance in Nexuiz is the same on average, with the exception of HDR (HDR works better/faster in Windows for some reason, but not by much).
Another thing that could be causing it... how old is your Windows install? Windows has the nasty habit of slowing down as it gets older.
Nexuiz only uses one core by the way.

Dude I envy you! Nexuiz on Ubuntu runs slow when I try to crank it and XP does a better job most times... DUDE you've got the better end of the stick! Nexuiz on Ubuntu for you is outperforming Windows!

I think its normal.... Se of you have any unnecessary process running in windows [ctrl+alt+delete] and [Processes] and "kill" the stupid ones.
