How to disable Pulse Audio/Correct your sound problems

Postby Lee_Stricklin » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:07 am

For some reason Ubuntu 8.04 and later come with this Pulse Audio pain in the ass. I'm not going to sit here and rip on it because it's not a bad little sound device, it's just improperly used. Anyway I was googling around the internet and found a website (see below) that tells you the command needed to disable it. Any time you want pulse audio disabled just enter "killall -9 pulseaudio" and that should correct everything. If you find having Pulse Audio disabled fixes your problems then I would suggest having that command execute at start up by opening your preferences, clicking "Start Up Applications" and adding the command in there.

Here's the site I got this off of:

So I need to kill pulseaudio anyway... how the f can I remove this piece of shit? I have not seen any easy guide for it yet.

Why must it be so damn complicated and hacky? :P Is there any good distribution that don't come with pulseaudio?

thats not hacky, thats look 'n paste.

You can however do it the dirty quick way.

Code: Select all
sudo mv /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio ~/
killall pulseaudio
sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install esound
Satisfaction not guaranteed.

I got pulseaudio to cooperate (sort of) on fresh install of Ubuntu. What I did was kill it, then set my game's sound preferences (I got mine set to 7.1 and 48KHz) and then re-enabled it and all my sound worked correctly after that.
I have left this website with the rest of the GPL Nexuiz community. You can find us at Xonotic.org
