I have a radeon x700 and haven't yet had reason to regret it. Infact, my last nivida cause me far more trouble with linux support, which is why I switched to ATI. Is the driver situation really that bad? Keeping in mind that I am poor; is is worthwhile investing in a nividia card for linux gaming?

Well you could try Game Knoppix from here: http://games-knoppix.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/
Its a linux-live-cd and comes with Nexuiz and should also have ati and nvidia drivers so you can just test how it does work on your system without the need to install anything..
I just had problems with Ati under linux but maybe you have more luck :)

gamesknoppix didn't work at all for me :\

LLGP does have nvidia drivers that load off boot, but not ATI

Also i've never had any serious issues with fglrx, infact in some games it performs better than windows!

And those are only the performance issues... There are quite a few workarounds for ATI driver bugs in the engine.

If it works for you: fine. I just wouldn't advise any linux user to buy an ATI card...[/quote]
