50% fps drop when playing with 2.5.2 on a 2.5.1 server?

Postby irrlicht » Thu Oct 01, 2009 9:57 pm

Hello Gentlemen,

I noticed an approximately 50 - 70% fps drop since i updated to 2.5.2. This happened as well with the update as with an entirely new download of 2.5.2. To ensure that i use the same graphic settings i copied also the config.cfg from the old version to the new one . . . . same effect.
I verified this on different servers and always compared directly the old and the new version within the same map and also within the same timeframe. . . so its not just an illusion from my side.

Did anybody notice the same?

My Config:
WinXP Home SP3
CPU: Intel Wolfdale E8400
Board: Gigabyte EP35, 2GB RAM
GPU: NVidia 8800GT

Used Graphic Settings: Normal, but with most features switched off
Resolution 1680x1050

Thanks for any hint!

Are you still having the 2.51 on your computer? I guess so.

Try to check your performance by running a timedemo, not on a server. You can find that in the multiplayer menue. Run the same timedemo on both versions and compare. The results are logged in the file Nexuiz\data\benchmark.log

Thanks for quick reply.

In both cases i took the same graphic setting "Normal"

This is Timedemo 1 for version 2.5.1:
date 2009-10-02 23:01:08 | enginedate 13:54:49 May 1 2009 8941 release | demo demos/demo1.dem | commandline C:\nexuiz-251\Nexuiz\nexuiz.exe | result 1910 frames 15.5860000 seconds 122.5458745 fps, one-second fps min/avg/max: 70 132 328 (90 seconds)

And that for version 2.5.2:
date 2009-10-02 22:59:36 | enginedate 02:52:53 Oct 1 2009 9271 release | demo demos/demo1.dem | commandline "C:\Nexuiz 252\Nexuiz\nexuiz.exe" | result 1910 frames 17.4180000 seconds 109.6566770 fps, one-second fps min/avg/max: 71 117 256 (90 seconds)

The difference appears to be very minor here. . . only about 10%, however as soon as i go online the effect rises to 50 - 70%.

Meanwhile i got confirmation from a work colleague that he observed the same on an ATI 1950. So it seems to be independent from the Graphics hardware.

And this is Version 2.5.2 with timedemo 1 after console command host_sleep 0

2009-10-02 23:15:37 | enginedate 02:52:53 Oct 1 2009 9271 release | demo demos/demo1.dem | commandline "C:\Nexuiz 252\Nexuiz\nexuiz.exe" | result 1910 frames 17.6410000 seconds 108.2705062 fps, one-second fps min/avg/max: 63 116 256 (90 seconds)

Almost the same result as the 2.5.2 timedemo from above. . . however i am going to check if the online fps will improve with this command. Thanks so far for the hint.

Ok, i tested that also online and it had no effect.

The worst is that many servers switched over already to 2.5.2 and by doing that Nexuiz becomes almost unplayable for me doesn´t matter if i use 2.5.1 or 2.5.2 on my home PC :´-(

Weird, my framerate has only improved with new releases.

During the days of 2.4.2, I needed my graphics settings to be really low; now I can have every effect maxed except anti-aliasing and various lighting effects without much impact on my my framerate.
My will be done.

Yes, it used to be the same problem. . . . but now i found something interesting: It seems to be connected to my DSL Router. I made a software update and switched off traffic shaping, and video stream enhancement crap. . . It became much better by that.

I am using a Fritzbox 7150. . .this is a very common router in Germany. My colleague has the same Router. . . .this is another hint that it might come from that. This is not the final confirmation now, cause the servers were almost empty in the afternoon. . . have to test tonight when its busy.....lets see and hope.

So far many thanks gentlemen.

.... "In both cases i took the same graphic setting "Normal"" --- We changed the config files around, so the normal.cfg from 2.5.1 and effects-normal.cfg from 2.5.2 are DIFFERENT... Thus they should be expected to perform differently. Basically, change the settings to be exactly the same and then run the test. You will most likely get better performance in 2.5.2 and than 2.5.1.

As for the difference online... I have no idea.
Do it yourself, or stop complaining.
