Health invisible from certain angles

Postby davidpbrown » Mon Oct 19, 2009 6:07 pm

This video shows an odd effect, I've seen a number of times now. The health sprite become invisible from certain angles, despite its still being present. I think I've seen this occasionally other times with strength too.

I can't determine exactly the angles this occurs but it does seem consistently the same angles on maps.

This is on Ubuntu Linux. I'm not sure what graphics card I have but expect it's the standard for this Dell Inspiron 530 = Nvidia GeForce 8300GS. No other problems, so expect it's a game bug.

----------
Incidentally, the playdemo to record video, seems to only look to ~/.nexuiz/data rather than ~/.nexuiz/data/demos.

This actually isn't because of your computer or a bug really. You see, we have something called entity culling. It's where you hide items that should not be in view of the player, in order to combat wallhacks and etc. Essentially, it hides items based on their center point. So large items are (unfortunately) some times taken away, even though part of the item is still visible. I think one of our developers was going to fix this, but I forgot if he did or not. Anyway, it's not really that big of a problem.

This is an extreme example though, I have never seen it as noticeable as this in any of the maps I have played. Does this happen like that for other players too, on the Greatwall map? I don't have Nexuiz installed so can't check myself.

Extreme? No. iirc culling changed in 2.5.2.. This is normal (for 2.5.2). And yes, it will happen for all other players as culling is server side.

Ah OK, well I have not played 2.5.2 yet so that explains that :)

Culling did not change in 2.5.2, at least not intentionally. This looks like a bug (using the wrong bounding box for culling).
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

That it happens a BIT is normal - especially due to an old bug with rotating models. But that extreme... odd.
