Nexuiz Server Help

Postby btdk34 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:39 am

Hello all. I have recently set up a dedicated Nexuiz server to play with some friends (version 2.5.2). The trouble is, I only know how to run the server from terminal (on my mac), which means that if I want to change any settings or change the map I must exit the game, make the changes in terminal, and then re-enter the game. Is there any way to run the server in-game, so that I can use the Nexuiz console to change the map or other settings for my server? I have searched around online and through forums for hours and have found close to nothing. The only lead I have is the "exec" cvar command; but I'm not sure how to use it/if it will work for my intended purposes. And ideas/suggestions? Thanks!

Yeah I suppose that would work too! I was just wondering if you could somehow have the actual server running in the console or something similar so I could change any setting I'd like to, anytime, without having to quit the game.

Use the in-game 'Create' tab for listen servers, but you'll need to set 'sv_public' to '1' if you wish to broadcast on the server listings.

Creating a server in-game might do the trick for you, but the server will quit when you stop playing. If you already know how to run a dedicated server, it's probably best to set some rcon_password in your server.cfg.

When you've done this, in your client you can set the same rcon_password - and invoke commands on the server like this: rcon <command>, for example: rcon gotomap eggandbacon

You may even make your settings permanent by editing the server.cfg directly, and use rcon to do this: rcon exec server.cfg
Before posting a reply, please read about the bikeshed

Well... I added the rcon_password PASSWORDHERE into my server.cfg file and then typed the same rcon_password PASSWORDHERE into the nexuiz console while playing, but then when I type rcon gotomap eggandbacon, it does nothing, only goes to the next line waiting for more input. Am I missing something here?

Oh! Sorry for the double post, but I just read my server log and it said that it denied rcon access to me when I tried to enter my password. I am positive that I am typing it in correctly, so what could be the problem?

It might have something to do with a too big difference between the system clocks on your server and your client. To test this, do 'rcon_secure 0' on both the client and the server and try again. If this is working then, sync your clocks and do 'rcon_secure 1' again.

There will soon be a "rcon_secure 2" mode which no longer has this problem.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
