More information about your gpu and drivers could be useful. But anyway installing the propriety drivers is required to play nexuiz with a playable framerate.

The drivers for that card are only OpenGL1.5, so I'm thinking some of the effects being used are causing the problem. Try using the lowest graphical setting and turning off most of the effects. See if that works and if it does start adding stuff from there. Things that will absolutely not work with the driver are AA, AF, Bloom/HDR, and GLSL.

Unfortunately for you AMD dropped this years the linux supports of R300/400/500 GPU (i.e. Radeon 9500 to X1950). And the older catalyst drivers aren't compatible with newer kernels and X11.
So only the open source drivers supports your card. Performance are good in 2D, but poor in 3D : in Nexuiz half of the propriety drivers fps. It's not enough to play decently. And like Melcar said, some feature are not supported or still bugged. What you should try, in the settings menu, video tab :
- disable "use OpenGl 2.0 Shaders (GLSL)"
- disable "use Occlusion Queries"
- set 'Vertex Buffer Objects (VBOs)" to off
In the Effects tab : press the low button quality preset.
If it's still doesn't work, the drivers are likely bugged. Try ./nexuiz-linux-sdl.sh -safe

Tested the game on an old machine running a 9600pro, and while the game runs, it does so really slow and with a bunch of corruption on screen; though I am using KMS, which is known to cause problems. I say check your dmesg log (Ubuntu has a log viewer, or you can view it with a text editor in /var/log/dmesg). Run the game, and after the error check the log and see if any clues pop up.

Is that all the log? Those logs are updated by the system constantly; even opening a window can produce several entries. Post all of it if you can. Other useful logs are the kernel log, message log, and syslog.
