strange physics in single player, help!

Postby r@fitiiixxx » Wed Dec 16, 2009 2:25 am

Hi, i'm new to this forum, i've been playing nexuiz for a while, and googled every problem i had, but i couldn't found something for this problem that's been bothering me since i've installed my nexuiz 2.5.2 via "KPackageKit" (the software and package manager in kubuntu 9.10)

i've: Kubuntu karmic koala 9.10 i386 ver, KDE desktop (when i play, i disable all the desktop efects)
Nvidia 8600 GT 512 mb, so i use the "recomended and latest drivers" from the drivers manager in kubuntu... the version is 185.

what's the problem?: Since i started playing, i noticed just this things whenever i play singleplayer, say campain or just create server thing...

Odd things i'm having:

>shotgun: shoots bullets twice as fast as any server with 2.5.2 using the secondary fire

>laser: it's secondary fire doesn't change to another weapon, it "makes an automatic Laser Jump" since laser with secondary button fires a laser beam just like the primary fire button but, perpendicular, or "it shoot's to my feet, and then i get a laser jump" if i'm standing in front of a wall or something, then i put the crosshair looking up, i shot wirh secondary button and the red beam is launched to the wall, perpendicular to my crosshair position, but downside... do you understand? if not please tell me i will make my explanation better next time :P

>machinegun: shoots bullets twice as fast as regular machinegun in any server, the real thing... in both modes, primary and secondary fire buttons...

>electro: secondary fire, or "blue balls" explode faster than in a regular server...

>crylink: shoots slower than normal or regular server...

>mortar: this one is anoyng... the secondary fire button shoots a granade that explodes in 0.5 sec! so it explodes really near from you, i can't launch secondary granades, those that wait to explode just a bit, and can bounce a bit...

>rocket launcher: proyectiles goes twice as fast, it's like a mortar launch, but faster!, the guide function and the manual-explode function works well

>nex: it reloads twice faster than normal or regular nex in any server...

so far now those are the weapons that "are broken", hope to get an answer to this questions... i've googled everything, but found nothing, so i finaly joined this forum...

then i have to tell that i've been experiencing some crashes since i installed the game... when i enter it just closes up, and joining a server sometimes does the same thing, i just re-open the aplication or just reconnect to the server i want to enter... but it may be something to do with the problems with weapons...

also if anyone can tell me how to force just my "color weapons" since in the servers i connect, the only color available is orange or red, and my weapons in that color suck... i want them grey, can i? :), but just client-side, so i don't have to ask that to the admin, he doesn't want to change it.

and the comand to see the actual "fps" frames per second, cause i don't know it yet

thanks anyway! this is a great game! i will keep playing it no mather happens...

pd: sorry for my bad english, i'm from Argentina.

Sounds like you've been running on a server with modified weapons (weapons, not physics) which hasn't been setup correctly meaning that you then run that config perpetually. This shouldn't really happen. I would advise against trawling through the console changing things unless you are proficient at it as this is another way of ending up where you have.

Go into ~/.Nexuiz and delete/rename all cfg files in there. This will revert all settings to the defaults so you will also have to setup any user settings that you have again.

FPS counter can be turned on through the video options menu.
Laters losers.

Welcome to the forum! Anyone who knows better may correct me, but if I recall correctly some of the "broken" things that you mention are actually not really broken, but were intended at least at the time of the release of 2.5.2. However, the 2.5.2 default config was discovered to have heavy balancing issues. This is why many public servers altered the default 2.5.2 behavior to what you experience in today's online play.

There is a "hotfix" in the tube for quite a while now already, but due to stability problems with the current darkplaces engine the developers have not been able to release it yet.

You can test the current development build by downloading the SVN version of Nexuiz, if you like. Instructions on how to do that can be found here:
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3061 (Debian/Ubuntu Linux)
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=3887 (Windows)

Or am I completely wrong on this?

What he is playing sounds like Havoc mode or some such...
Possibly not the worst mapper in the world.

Somehow I remember playing Nexuiz 2.5.2 when it was very freshly released, and even popular public servers had the automatic laser jump as laser secondary for a short while. Also the Rocket launcher fired high speed flying rockets and the MG somehow was the ultimate general purpose mass destructive killer weapon... after playing a few matches I decided to take a break with nexuiz and wait for a better balance.

I do not remember to have encountered all of the things you mention, especially mortar. Maybe you really should try to move the cfg files out of your ./Nexuiz folder if you find any there...

This is 2.unknown balance. (not 2.5.2 or 2.5.3) It was the settings that where supposed to go default in 2.6 or so (LordHavocs re-balance, but its been replaces by another odd balance config..). You get this insome svn build. or perhaps some evil server stuffed you a package with these settings.

thanks everyone and i'm sorry for not being earlier... i had my final exams today, so i was fully focused on that. :S

now i 've read all your posts, and things that i've tried, are: deleting config.cfg (the only actual config on my .nexuiz folder on home...) and deleting some weird stuff about demos and things...

when i enter the game, it just stays the same way as before... so it's from no use... and this things that i experience... those are from when i installed the game, the first time i played, was in the campaing, not in a public server... and there, it was changed...

tZork said something about the physics of nexuiz 2.5.2 and 2.5.3 ??? there is another version and i didn't know? better check that before playing next time!

and i remember touching some button of havoc mode, it's that what it is? if it is so, how do i change it?

and thanks halogene, for the links to download the svn version, but it looks messy for me, i'm newbie in the linux world, i will download it one more time and if it keeps the same way, i will do an svn download, but first try the easier way. :)

thanks a lot guys! i'll try this things, and see how it works...

GG, GL & HF

pd: when does the 2.6 version comes to our pcs? if you don't know really, "sometime in the first/second half of next year" would be great :D

If you need any newbie-sort of help for getting svn to run on linux, don't hesitate to ask me. I am not an expert at linux but I do have a couple of years experience with linux so I will probably be able to answer questions that linux newbies bother.

It might take some time for me to answer though, as I do not have access to internet regularly these days :o/

Oh, and as for the havoc mode you should be able to switch back easily if you accidentally switched to havoc mode. You will find the button on the lower left corner of the upper left window when you start nexuiz.

I should have been clearer here; 2.5.3 is NOT released yet, its the next version in the works.

Actuality yes thats very likely to be just what happened. Stupid me didn't even consider it. xD I don't remember precisely where that button is (no Nexuiz on this computer so i cant check), maybe in the campaign mode window, or the multi player one perhaps.

Your guess is as good as mine (no one knows, or as some say "when its done" ; ). Nexuiz is developed by ppl on their spare time; so release dates are next to impossible to make/keep.

I'm really gratefull with all of you guys, for all the answers, and guidance. Right now i'm reinstalling the nexuiz from the kubuntu repositories, if it doesn't work, i'll do the svn instalation... i'll ask in the future if i had to, about the svn instalation here, next thing is, i'll post about how i fix this if the reinstalation works well.

thank you guys, then i'll come back to post about the new instalation, internet is really damm slow now =/
