Freeze on exit and settings reset

Postby LemonDrops » Sun Jan 24, 2010 10:20 pm

The post title pretty much explains it all.

Sometimes when I quit (using either F10 or clicking 'quit'), Nexuiz will freeze my computer and I have to do a hard reset... which I never really liked doing because I feel that it can't be good to do that.

Usually when that happens, the second annoying bug is that all my settings from video to name/player settings all reset to default. Odd thing is that I'm still stuck on level 12. Stupid bots with balls of fire. It's bad enough what humans do with fire but I guess now I know what a computer can do with it too!

Anyways, I find it very annoying to keep going through all the personalized commands and video and audio and player settings, just to get it back the way it was.

Anyone have any idea what could be going on and what I can do to prevent it? I am running my Gateway P-6860FX with Ubuntu 9.10 Jaunty and Nexuiz is a fun game to play when I'm running Linux. I'd rather not install it on my Vista boot mostly because I dislike Windows and also because I enjoy all those things I can do with Linux (that does not involve video games).

Thank you very much for your response!

Hmm weird. Only time nexuiz thrashed my settings was when my HD was full. Nexuiz seems to write config.cfg when it shuts down. When the HD is full at that point it can't write it ;)

I know for sure my HD isn't anywhere near full. I got a 1 Tb external for media and a 320 HD which is only 1/3 full of programs.

Maybe a problem with Ubuntu? When I did the initial install, there was a temporary issue with saving user settings. Few updates later and most programs would save settings.

I guess Ubuntu is king of the distro's because with all the problems it has, I got no choice but to fix them so I have to learn. It's like evolution, adapt or die.

I'm going to look for the settings file(s) and try to keep a copy of it somewhere other than where it is that, for whatever reason, resets itself.

Lol know, that's debian... ubuntu is some kind of castrated debilitated debian :P But I'm not here to start a distro-war.

cd into your home, and do a:

mv .nexuiz .nexuiz_old

If you encounter no problems, it might be some odd permission problem on your previous .nexuiz directory (Btw. that's a hidden folder, where all your settings and downloaded maps, created demos etc. are).
If you don't have any problems now, it means you're all fine. Still, all your settings will be lost (well, not really, they are now in .nexuiz_old, so you might have to copy stuff from there except your config.cfg).

Not trying to start a distro war, we all know that ______ is the absolute best because of 1, 2, and 3!

I was trying to say that because of its flaws, I'm learning Linux bit by bit so I take that as a good thing. 8)

It has happened a few times since last I posted however, I was able to CTRL ALT F2 and get into terminal. Didn't really know where to go from there because I don't know how to restart my desktop (still searching Google for that answer) so I just did:

Code: Select all
Sudo shutdown -r 5

It rebooted and my settings where still there. So, if Nexuiz freezes on exit and I do a hard shutdown (hold power button) I lose settings. If I exit to terminal and reboot there, my settings would load.

If you can go into terminal with CTRL-ALT-F1 then just login and do

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

It wil tell you then that there's now a new way to do it which i don't remember right now ;) This should still work though. If you use kdm or xdm instead of gdm (gdm is the default in ubuntu) then substitute that in there..
