Unable to Join Internet Multiplayer games

Hi all,
first my system: Linux Kubuntu 9.10 x86_64 architecture, nvidia geforce 8600GT Athlon dual core 4800 processor

Everything works, single player games, I can start a server myself and join it with bots ok but whenever I try and join a running multiplayer game I never get to join it. I just sit at a console window seeing all the chat messages scrolling up the screen. The last thing that I see the game do is 'loading csprogs.dat' it does this every time, starts at about 4% then jumps to 100%.

I installed nexuiz through the repo's initially, then downloaded the map pack off alientrap.org
When this didn't work I tried downloading the full zip file from alientrap and unpacking in my home directory. (so i have /home/wayne/Nexuiz/..... )
I then un-installed the version via the package manager leaving just the un-packed zip file in my home directory in case of a conflict but still the same problem.
I've tried running it using all the different executables as suggested by someone on the ubuntu forums; the glx and sdl versions both x86_64 and the 686 versions and each time the same problem.

I'd appreciate any help to get it to run, it plays really good but I can only play bots at the moment!

Does anything get downloaded to the /home/wayne/.nexuiz/data/dlcache/ folder?

Hi, yes it does.
I have tried deleting all the maps I downloaded and deleting the whole .nexuiz directory and starting afresh. After attempting to join a couple of DM games it downloaded some pk3 files to this folder again.
Same as before, last thing is it says downloading csprogs.dat, a few seconds later this is 100%, this line stays at the bottom of the console whilst chat messages continue to fly up the screen, you get periodic 'server keep alive' messages so it would seem there is no problem with a connection to the server, I don't need to open any inbound ports do I for this, this would only be needed for setting up a server if I'm right?

I can even chat by typing 'say hello' at the console and the participants can see my messages but I never get to join the game. I take it normally after a few seconds it should just launch me straight into the game without me typing anything else?
