Input Lag offline, online, and in LAN

Postby bequinta » Wed Mar 03, 2010 9:52 pm

So heres the deal. I play Nexuiz just fine on my 15" Macbook Pro. FPS always above 140 online and no lag issues. Basically, it runs absolutely perfect with no issues. But heres the problem...

My friend and I love to play LAN games together. He uses a Dell Inspiron 14, which as a Dual-Core Pentium, 4 GB of RAM, and a GMA 4500m and it's running Windows 7. We have been playing Nexuiz for a couple months now and I would always end up crusing him with over double the points. I though he was just worse than me until we decided to swap systems. And oooh crap...he had like a half-second input lag. (hell, he didn't even notice it until i pointed it pointed it out)

So I had a few theories. 1. The fact there was no dedicated server running. 2. Framerate 3. Mouse. I ended up assuming it was frame rate buuuuuttt not the case. It was lower than mine, but he was getting about 40-70 fps, which would't explain the half-second. I pulled put a crappy tower that has a 1.7 ghz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, and a Geforce FX 5500. The framerate was significantly higher than his modern laptop, getting around 70-90 fps, BUT STILL, same amount of input lag. I don't know what to do. ALL settings are at the lowest on the laptop and the crappy tower. I've tried the "Wait for GPU to finish each frame" thing, I used a dedicated server for LAN. Im really confused. Oh and just for reference, we can play Unreal 2004 with a dedicated server just fine. I put both my Macbook and his Inspirion side by side and did a jumping test and they matched PERFECTLY.

Please ANY help would be apreciated. I REALLY love this game, especially Minstagib LAN partys. I'm on my hands and knees here and I am determined to make this work!

Do you possibly play on LAN via Wireless connection?
As far as I know your delay you are having is equal to your ping time as the server will actually confirm your movement (dull explaination I know). So maybe you should check and ping between your both systems and make sure the ping is very low.

Do you have OpenGL drivers from the manufacturer, installed proper, after any DirectX bullshit?

Are you getting the same lag with the SDL/non-SDL version?

I am using standard crossover cables for a LAN connection, both with a router and directly connected to both comps. The ping's hover around 20 for both comps. As for the Open GL thing, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. I assume they come with the standard display drivers? If not, where do I get them? The only nVidia OpenGL downloads I see are for the very recent cards. Is the FX 5500 not supported? Also, I found out that the 4500m in my friends laptop supports OpenGl 2.0, but I can't find drivers for that either. And yes I tried the SDL and it still lagged. I should also mention it only lags when you fire, not navigation.

If you're using the graphics drivers direct from NVIDIA/Intel you should be all set OpenGL-wise... If that's not the problem, I'm out of ideas, sorry.
