Tons of problems with AMD64/ATi/Fedora Core 5 build.

Hey guys, I'm experiencing a lot of major problems with Nexuiz for Linux. I'm running Fedora Core 5 right now and decided to check out Nexuiz. So I run a yum install, download the game, and install it (I installed the x86_64 version just to let you know). I run the game, and as soon as I get to the main menu, the entire game is a mess. My mouse pointer is laggy as hell, the sound skips like crazy, and it's almost impossible to click on menus. Somehow I managed to start a Campaign game and go right into the first level. Wow, what a disaster. All of the textures on the wall are stretched to hell (they're all blocky and very, very, low-res) and I'm going at like five FPS. I exited the game because it was just horrible. I thought switching from Windows XP to Fedora Core 5 was a good idea...now I'm considering not to. I had a feeling the Linux would have absolutely no 64-bit support, but anyways, here's my system:

AMD Athlon64 3500+
ATi Radeon X800 Pro/GTO
Mushkin PC3200-DDR400 1 GB RAM
VIA '97 Audio Controller (integrated into the motherboard)
Fedora Core 5

So does anyone have a possible solution? Every other game I've ran (Lincity, FreeCiv, Frozen Bubble) worked perfectly fine (damn 3D Linux support!). Thanks guys.

Did you install the ATI drivers? Their name is something like fglrx. Without them, everything runs with software rendering - the other games you mentioned are fast enough with that, but Nexuiz isn't.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

Yes, all of the drivers are installed (I have the display settings under Administration and I've tried another yum install, they're all there).

you can also check if the drivers are correctly installed by typing in a shell glxinfo | grep -i direct. It should return direct rendering: Yes
Maybe its just some config thingy..

I just did that glxinfo command and it says no.,.

What the hell? I've tried looking at every guide concerning installing ATi drivers on Fedora Core 5 and none of them have helped me. How the hell do you do it? I'm about to throw my monitor out the window soon due to this incompatibility crap...

You know what, guys? I'm actually just gonna' get the 32-bit version of Fedora Core 5, because the 64-bit version has way too many issues with like...EVERYTHING. I'm gonna delete the current ISO's and download the 32-bit ones. Hopefully I won't run into any issues. Thanks for your help and I'll post back if this happens again.

In this specific case, you will run into the very same issue.

You need to install the ATI drivers manually. IIRC Fedora doesn't distribute packages for it.

Linux runs fine in 64 bit mode here ... (No clue if ATI has 64bit drivers or not though)

Hmm i can't help you with this one, i never used fedora and i did not install the ati drivers manually (back when i still had a ati card) but with the help of debian (sid) packages..
Hmm i did a quick search on google and all i could find was 'yum install ati-fglrx'. Maybe you still have to change your X config to load the ati drivers? Guess you have to edit etc/X11/xorg.conf. There should be a line saying driver ati and change it to flgrx.

On the other hand i think its just fair to tell you that atis drivers are NOT very good. They will get you to run Nexuiz once they are installed but they perform much worse then under windows. It seems ati just does not care very much for linux. Thats the reason i got a nvidia card myself. But as you have some GO variant i guess you can not exchange the graphiccard :). So just do not expect it to run as good as in windows.. (if you have ever tried).

Ok guys, good news. I have the 32-bit version now and the graphics in Nexuiz actually look decent. :)

Except there's two more problems I'm having:

1. The sound is skipping like crazy, in menus and in-game. Any way to fix it?
2. Anytime I try to apply a new setting in the Options menu, the game will crash. Can I fix this?

Thanks. I defitenly should've just gone with the 32-bit version before. ;)
