walking through flags

Postby tChr » Sat Sep 09, 2006 9:51 pm

On greens CTF server we tend to walk through items from time to time. when picking up flags, nothing happens and we walk through them. also when delivering flags and stuff..

demo attached.

this is quite severe

Without a demo?

I suppose you jumped over the items or flags. Seems to partially be an engine bug that's been there for ages (and probably even in Q1) and maybe wrong model sizes (but the size of flags looks right).

However, until I made necchesu, I didn't think of the possibility of this being an engine problem - however, play that map on slowmo 2 and sys_ticrate 0.1 and you'll fly through the strength...

However, this can only happen at extremely high velociites or when jumping "over" an item.

BTW, which map does Green run that allows this to happen? I can't think of this happening on face, eggandbacon, runningmanctf and basementctf. mentalspace and vitamea are maps where it does happen when jumping over the flag.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.

I seen this too, and it dosent take insane speed or jumping. sometimes it just as if the flags touch function dosent trigger. You can walk up to the flag, stop dead center on it and it still wont "stick". you usualy have to walk back and forth over it a few times to make it catch on.

Then it is an engine bug and we can't do anything about it.

Have you tried at the DEFAULT value of sys_ticrate? Green is known for changing this setting...

changing this value and looking how much this effect changes could be interesting too.

Want to see that. THAT would be new to me and a much more severe engine bug than what happens on necchesu.

I run the maps controlfactor, nexface and runningmanctf

sys_ticrate is 0.03 --- I gonna change it to 0.05 again for a while, to test it :)

it happens on controlfactor mostly, the ticrate is 0.03, we suspected that to be the case, but to explain what happens:

I walk onto the flag on its pedistal, and walk right through it. Some times I can stand right on top of it and nothing happens. If that happens i have to move back anf forth a few times, one itme i had to move back and forth like 10 times to get the picup.

Theory:

The pedistals on controlfactor are sloped, so it might very well happen that you get some airtime when runnin gover them, combined with 0.03 tic that might be it:

suggestion:
Change the pedistals and/or
change the ticrate

okay, I had problems with ticrate 0.05 because it alters physics, and I really don't want to assimilate to another physic ^^ - I set it back to 0.03

beside this I didn't have ANY problems with the flags, on none of the three mentioned maps, at ticrate 0.03

I'd recommend the former anyway, they don't work well for walking through the flag, so I jump onto it anway.
