Recording demos

Postby ai » Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:53 pm

Hey. I've had this problem when I try to record a demo and then stops it, it dissapears, or it's like it never was recorded. For instance: I write 'rec demoname', connect to a server using either the join button to join a public server or write in the console, then type 'stop', 'disconnect' or 'quit'. Then when I click the demos button it isn't there, I check my Nexuiz folder (even check every subfolder :P) but the demo was not to be found. So I now am doing it twice just to be sure it works. Like I record a demo, stop and see if it is there, if it is then it's fine, if it isn't then I go on until it has showed up.

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Also nother thing (dunno if this is new in the 2.1 patch or whatever) but before when recording a demo it went under the 'data' folder. Now it actaully goes under 'data/demos' which is a good thing. But I can't recall as of when it started to do that. Is it new in the 2.1 patch? Cause I have some wierd imagination that at first it didn't go under 'data/demos' but rather 'data' only.

The default demo path has never chamged. It's always in data/, "rec" is just an alias to "record demos/$1", that's why your demo ends up in data/demos.
However i'm unable to reproduce your problem, demo files are always created immediately after "record" and i can watch them growing. But i don't have a windoze system here to test wheather it behaves differently.

Ho? You can watch them growing? I also checked that when I was recording and my files are coming as soon as I've stopped the demo. As long as it is recording there is no file (which I actually thought was a little strange but imagined that's the way it should be).

That does indeed sound strange.. The demo file should be 'alive' as soon as you enter the record command. I even sometimes have to delete those files as i start recording via script but do not always play after starting nexuiz.

Did this ever get resolved? I think ai had this problem just a couple days ago in a match against kojn.

Well the next version will offer autorecord but as kadaverjack said, as soon as the record command is issued it creates a file with size three bytes and it grows when joining a server and playing. So there has to be a file even if recording stops for some reason. I never had any such problems.

do you use windows vista, ai ? :P if so, you probably found the source of the problem, use winxp :D
