Client lockup and crashes

Postby patch61 » Fri Oct 20, 2006 3:22 am

Ever since I started playing Nexuiz (how do you pronounce that, anyway?) a few months ago, I have been subject to random client lockup. My main view and sound will freeze and to get it working again, I would have to get a new server list. As soon as the list starts populating, my current game unfreezes.

Now for about the past 2 weeks or so, the whole game will crash to the windows crash dialog (where you can report the crash to microsoft).

Can anybody help me with either of these issues?

Pronounce it as a Latin word. "Nexius".

I have also noticed that if I have frozen in a game, refreshing the server list unfreezes me.
Try using nexuiz-sdl.exe rather than nexuiz.exe, this uses an alternative method of hardware input and could be related to freezing.

Hi Patch. Welcome to the forum.

Hmm such a hang sounds like problems with your network or internet access. Maybe some bad router. Is there is also a clock being displayed in the (upper-left?) corner? This will happen if your connection to the server was cut by something. (Packetloss, a ISP problem or something)

A crash however is an other thing. Nexuiz itself should be very very stable by now. So maybe you can see if there are updates for your graphic, sound and network drivers are available. A virus scan is also a good idea.
If that does not help there are a few settings that might help with some bad drivers that you can try and also as Dave suggested its a good idea to just try the 'other' nexuiz binary as it might also help with driver problems sometimes.

Thanks for the replies. I have updated my drivers (which weren't old anyway) with no change at all. I tried the -sdl executable and the only differences were that the crashing was straight to the desktop instead of the error reporting dialog and that I could no longer use my extra mouse buttons. I am about to give up on this game in frustration. No other program or game does this.

Now the problem is that others don't have this crash.

Can you try running "drwtsn32" and find the crash report log and send that to us? Alternatively, Control Panel -> Administration -> Event log viewer and look for the crash log entries of Nexuiz. There should be two - one by Nexuiz and one by "Dr. Watson". The latter is of interest to us. If you only find the Nexuiz one, send that one to us... but you SHOULD have a Dr. Watson one as long as you haven't used tools like XP Antispy that break your Windows configuration because of paranoia reasons.

To send these to us, use the Copy to Clipboard button and paste it into an email to polzer [at] informatik *dot* uni-frankfurt #dot# de.

Oh, and which Nexuiz version were you using? It should be 2.1.
1. Open Notepad
2. Paste: ÿþMSMSMS
3. Save
4. Open the file in Notepad again

You can vary the number of "MS", so you can clearly see it's MS which is causing it.
