Use Joystick/Controller on Nexuiz?

Postby skylerthedialer » Thu Feb 01, 2007 6:49 am

Greetings,

I'm more used to FPS games on console systems, so I find using a mouse and keyboard clumsy. I just downloaded the Windows version of Nexuiz, and was surprised when I couldn't get my controller to work . The system recognizes it...

I've read a little on this forum that suggests the software should be there to support a joystick, but it doesn't auto-detect and there appear to be no menu options for enabling one. The control options only seem to allow for keyboard keys and mouse buttons...

So, does Nexuis support a joystick/controller, and if so how do I make it work?

The engine does support Joysticks, just not the menus. To be honest in all the (almost) 2 years now since Nexuiz is freely available there were (including yours) 2 requests for this :). So even ignoring the fact that mouse will be more accurate and faster then a joystick i doubt its worth to invest the time to add this to the menu as almost noone wants that.

Though you should be able to make you buttons work in the 'controls' options. Just click the action and then press your joystick button. For the settings i will have to point you to the available variables in Nexuiz that control joystick stuff. I have never used them. That the the following variables: http://alientrap.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n= ... oyadvanced

Uhm never versions also can do joystick stuff in all the sdl versions on all plattforms i think its really time to update the wiki.. i'll try to find some time for that..
You can find those variables here: http://alientrap.org/wiki/pmwiki.php?n= ... xisforward

Alright so I just got nexuiz for linux a few days back. At first I thought that trying to use the controller would be a total failure. I tried going into the settings manager for my "joystick" and tested it's sensitivity. The system recognized both of the joysticks on my Logitech Dual Action Controller, but for some reason nexuiz didn't want to recognize it. I clicked the check box that allows joystick, to no avail. Finally I gave up and continued playing nexiuz for a while, just checking the game out. I had a background operation running, so I closed nexiuz, when I came back the controller worked. So I figure; restart nexuiz after enabling your controller. Now after that, just as quickly as the controller started working it gave up. This problem was fixed easily by changing joy_enable to 1 (it said that 0 was enable, but I don't think so, I believe that 2 would mean 2 controllers, and if you index them correctly you could run multiple instances of nexiuz on the same PC, using separate controllers, just a thought.) I hope that this helps anyone that wants to play nexuiz with a controller.

If i remember right joy_enable is just boolean, every value different to 0 will mean its enabled. And there should be an other variable joy_index (or similar..)
use
Code: Select all
cvarlist joy
to see all such variables and short help texts.
