I think that you need to like the genre before starting a MMORPG. If you for instance don't like fantasy of course you won't like it there either. If you do like it but you're experienced with single player RPG's then an MMORPG might disappoint you. It's what you expect from it. And an MMORPG is very similar to a normal single player RPG except you can play with friends, and of course there are some other stuff. But also when playing those "bigger" mmorpg's they have events, quests and stuff are constantly updated etc. etc.
My friend plays only in parties and is rarely alone, he has pretty much made the entire world his friends. He's played for quite long time too though. He's not much of following the story or anything like that. He want's to do stuff together with others.
I'm more of the "lone"-type.
